BATH — A 15-year-old Phippsburg boy sustained serious injuries, but survived, after apparently jumping from the Sagadahoc Bridge Monday morning, Police Chief Michael Field said.
Field said the boy was on the southern end of the bridge, and fell approximately 50 feet to an area of land between Commercial Street and a pump station.
The boy was “very lucky” to survive, Field said.
The incident was called in at 7:50 a.m., and the boy was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland. As of Monday afternoon, his injuries appeared not to be life-threatening, Field said.
He said police had no explanation for the jump from the bridge, which carries U.S. Route 1 over the Sagadahoc River between Bath and Woolwich.
“We hope the boy does OK, and … can move on from there,” Field said.
