SCARBOROUGH — Scarborough Downs’ move to Biddeford got closer to reality last week when proponents filed signatures in favor of the change with the secretary of state.

The Passamaquoddy Indian tribe also announced it has aligned with the proponents of what will be called Biddeford Downs in an effort to convince the Legislature to extend the deadline for local approval to move the track and establish a racino in Biddeford.

The racino proposal was approved by Biddeford voters last November. But the track cannot move until state law is amended, including the new law passed in a referendum last November that prohibits casinos within 100 miles of a planned Oxford casino. Biddeford Downs would fall within that 100-mile radius.

According to a press release, Biddeford Downs and the Passamaquoddy tribe filed 536 certified signatures with the secretary of state on Jan. 19 for a citizen’s initiative to change the law to allow both the Biddeford racino and a tribal racino in Washington County.
