CUMBERLAND — A petition to call a referendum on the Town Council’s approval of a contract zone on Main Street has been issued by the town clerk’s office.

Upset by the council’s vote to allow construction of a credit union at the former Chase Flower Shop, some residents are hoping to put the issue to the public.

The petition, which was requested by a citizen group called Save Cumberland’s Maine Street, is due back to the town by April 6 so the town clerk’s office can verify signatures in time to get the issue on the June ballot. Nearly 600 signatures, or 10 percent of the town’s registered voters, are required.
