SCARBOROUGH — Peter Vanier, 53, of Scarborough and Caribou, died July 22 after a long period of declining health and a hard-fought battle against colon cancer.

He was born June 13, 1962, in Presque Isle, the youngest child of John and Theresa Vanier. He was educated in the Caribou school system and attended Northern Maine Vocational Technical Institute. For most of his adult life, he worked in the information technology department of the Aroostook Mental Health Center. During his career, he received the center’s Vicker’s Award, an honor in which he took great pride.

Vanier loved to hunt and fish, and always felt a strong connection to nature, whether he was in the woods or on the water. Most of all, he was happy when surrounded by his family and good friends.

He was predeceased by his mother, Theresa, in 1997.

Vanier is survived by his father, John Vanier, of Caribou; his son, Tony, of Boston; his sister, Jane, and her husband, Bill Egeler, of Presque Isle; his brother, Michael, and his wife, Nancy, of Portland; his twin sister and primary care-giver, Ann, of Scarborough; two special nieces, Teressa and her husband, Bennett Meulendyk, of Dublin, California, and Erica, of Portland; and several aunts, cousins, an uncle and many dear friends.

Vanier’s family thanks the many health-care professionals who cared for him, including staff at Mercy Hospital and its clinics, VNA Home Health and New England Life Care.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to an organization that Vanier strongly supported, Hunt of a Lifetime Foundation/Maine Hunt, 6297 Buffalo Road, Harborcreek, PA 16421.

A committal service will be held at a later date.
