YARMOUTH — Peter George Corey, 66, died suddenly at his home June 25. Corey was born on May 12, 1947, in White Plains, N.Y., to Walter E. Corey, Jr. and Theresa Stallone.

Educated in local schools, he developed an early interest in geography, history and art, all of which he nurtured throughout the many travels of his life. Though not a college graduate he read widely and wisely while pursuing his many interests during family trips to Colorado, Washington and California.

Later in life he spent many happy months in Florida where he learned to play adaptive golf – a sport he brought back to his home in Maine where he helped found Maine Adaptive Golf, a passion of his for many years. In Florida, he helped select Maltese dogs as family pets, and became skilled in solving complicated jigsaw puzzles.

He was fond of helping others, starting with his parents for whom he cared in Cape Elizabeth. This personal sacrifice he kept private and never regretted. He never tired of large family gatherings in which he celebrated the young and new born. He looked forward to summers and visits with his nieces at Higgins Beach.

After the deaths of his parents, who well into their 80s, Corey spent many months in Florida. He settled in Sarasota, where he spent every spring training rooting for the Red Sox.

A lifelong bachelor, Peter treasured the condo at North Gables in Yarmouth where he was devoted to his beloved sister-in-law, Julie Corey, who dropped him off at the Cumberland County YMCA every day of the week. He felt privileged to give her away in marriage to Walter Corey, his brother and confidant. Together, the three would attend Sunday Mass followed by dinner at one of his favorite restaurants.

To his friends at the YMCA and elsewhere, Corey’s quiet life was a model of commitment, love and caring. He gave of himself and of his resources quietly, unstinting and without expecting anything in return.

That his quiet life was shattered by an explosion remains a life altering tragedy. His deep faith in a merciful God assures his survivors that he is now in the embrace of a loving God who rejoices having Peter close by.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Tuesday at St. Bartholomew Church in Cape Elizabeth. Interment followed in New Calvary Cemetery, South Portland.
