Cumberland County police chief honored by FBI

The FBI National Academy Associates, New England Chapter has recognized Cumberland County Sheriff Kevin J. Joyce, of Standish, for his lifelong achievement of service and commitment in the area of public safety and law enforcement.

According to a news release from the nominating committee, Joyce received the Harold Murphy Honor in December for continuing service to the communities he serves while exhibiting exemplary performance in the arena of public safety.

A 32-year veteran of the CCSO, Joyce rose through the ranks from deputy to chief deputy.

Joyce is a graduate of the 218th session of the FBI National Academy at Quantico, Virginia, held in 2004, and “Since that time his active participation and keen leadership skills have contributed to the continuing successes of the New England Chapter in providing innovative learning, public safety collaboration and community service throughout the region and beyond,” said Peter McGowan, chief of the Dover, Massachusetts, Police Department and member of National Academy Associates. “Kevin was elevated to key positions within the New England Chapter, leading to very successful training opportunities for the membership and our law enforcement partners in Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Rhode Island.”

Recognition

Supreme Court Chief Justice Leigh I. Saufley recently announced attorney Peter J. Guffin, who leads the privacy and data security practice at the Portland-based law firm Pierce Atwood, was recognized as the Outstanding Volunteer of the Year.

Guffin, who also serves as a visiting professor of practice and co-director of the Information Privacy Law Program at the University of Maine Law School, was a member of the Judicial Branch’s Task Force on Privacy and Transparency. The task force was convened to assist the Supreme Judicial Court in developing guidelines that balance the need for transparency in government with individual rights of privacy as the judicial branch shifts to digital court files. 

Kerry Peabody, a long-term care and life and disability insurance agent at Clark Insurance, has been appointed to the national Certification for Long-Term Care Board of Advisors. The board provides guidance on the development and improvement of  CLTC professional designation, training materials and exam. The board consists of six long-term care professionals from across the country, chosen for their expertise, networks and reputation.

Hires, promotions, appointments

Northern Light Mercy Hospital announced that Susan Woods, MD, has been named its new medical information officer. Woods, who is board-certified in internal medicine and informatics, most recently served as director of patient experience at the Department of Veteran’s Affairs Connected Care Office, where she worked on the development and national deployment of its portal, telehealth, and mobile applications.

Granted

Snowlion Rep, a nonprofit professional theater company in Portland, has received two grants to fund the production of the new musical “Mesmerized,” which will be performed in May at Portland Ballet Studio Theater. The Davis Family Foundation has awarded a grant of $5,000 for the project, while the Maine Community Foundation has awarded a grant of $3,000.
