Appointments

GrowSmart Maine recently appointed the following people to its board: Judy East of Calais, Jane Lafluer of Camden, Mike Lyne of Brunswick, Chris Robinson of Kennebunk, Matt Teare of Yarmouth, Eloise Vitelli of Arrowsic, David Webster of Freeport, Sen. Dick Woodbury of Yarmouth and Robin Zinchuk of Bethel. The following people will be serving another term: Fred Heimann of North Yarmouth and Anna Marie Thron of Portland.

Lori Thayer and Tay (Frederick) Veitch were both recently elected to the Friends of Casco Bay/Casco Baykeeper Board of Directors. Thayer is a medical and environmental anthropologist currently working at the University of New England Center for Community and Public Health. Veitch is an entrepreneur and recovering attorney. He currently operates a manufacturing company that designs, fabricates and assembles all matters of automated and non-automated equipment.

Awards

Terry Seavey recently received the Yarmouth Chamber of Commerce President’s Award. The award honors and individual or business whose work on behalf of the organization is so outstanding and whose dedication is so longstanding that a special award is merited.

Camp Sunshine of Casco was recently named one of the top nonprofits in the U.S. by two independent national charity evaluation organizations, based on feedback from volunteers, donors and recipients of services.

Agnieszka “Aga” Pinnette, a third-year student at the University of Maine School of Law, recently received the Switzer Environmental Fellowship. The program awards $15,000 for recipients to complete their advanced degrees and develop expertise to address critical environmental challenges. She is among 20 recipients of the award for 2012.

Dr. Alain Montegut, a doctor at Martin’s Point Healthcare, was recently awarded the Medal of Honor for the Health of the People of Vietnam. Montegut, vice president of primary care development and a primary care physician, received the award to mark his many contributions to the improvement of the primary health care delivery system and people of Vietnam. The Medal of Honor award is given by the government of Vietnam to honor individuals who have made a significant contribution to the improvement of the health of its people.

Good Deeds

Dr. Zev Myerowitz, Amber Smalley and office manager Catie Fairbanks-Cliffe recently hand delivered more than 300 homemade s’mores and more than 40 plants to teachers, community services, town hall, firemen, policemen, bus drivers, librarians and support staff to thank the town of Cape Elizabeth for welcoming their new business, Cape Chiropractic and Acupuncture.

Sarah Hellstedt and Thomas Newman, attorneys at Murray Plumb & Murray, were recently honored for their pro bono legal services. The pair devoted more than 50 hours of pro bono work in the past year, representing immigrant refugees seeking asylum through the Immigrant Legal Advocacy Project.

The Maine affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure recenly received a check for $15,000 from Gateway Title, in addition to nearly $3,000 the Gateway teams raised for the Bangor and Portland Race for the Cure events.

As a part of the firm’s 150 Project, Verrill Dana recently donated 150 pounds of Maine potatoes from Webb Farms in Aroostook County and delivered them to Spurwink Services of Portland. The potatoes were then distributed to group homes from Somerset to York counties.

The Staples Foundation recently awarded $3,500 to the Girl Scouts of Maine.

Piper Shores recently announced a donation of $2,000 to the Scarborough Land Trust to assist in the re-siding of the east wall of the Long Barn at Broadturn Farm. Built in the 1890’s the barn is the largest and oldest of the three barns on the property owned by the Scarborough Land Trust. This project is just part of a plan for needed renovations to the barn which will include a new roof, additional siding and funding permitting.

New Hires

Martin’s Point Healthcare recently hired Rich Entel, Peter O’Donnell and Alison Cameron. Entel will serve in the family practice. O’Donnell is a certified nurse and nurse practitioner and has worked for Mercy Hospital, Correctional Medical Services, Falmouth House at Ocean View and the Maine Department of Behavioral Development Services. Cameron is a certified nurse who received her education from Roger Williams University and the University of Southern Maine.

Salem Advisory Group recently hired Jennifer Arps as an investment advisor representative. Prior to joining Salem Advisory Group, she managed banking offices for Sovereign Bank and The Bank of Maine.

McTeague Higbee recently hired Katherine Gatti as an associate attorney, focusing on workers’ compensation. Gatti received her law degree from the University of Maine School of Law. She also served as student attorney for the Cumberland Legal Aid Clinic providing legal representation and assistance to low-income clients in a wide range of cases including civil litigation and family law.

Maine Community Health Options recently hired Karen Getchell as its new manager of provider contracting. In this role she will be developing and managing a high-quality, statewide network of physicians and other providers designed to ensure the best care for clients and small businesses. Her background includes over 15 years of experience at Martin’s Point Health Care.

The Institute for Humane Education recently welcomed Tony Scucci to serve on its board of directors. Scucci is a senior governance associate with BoardSource, based in Washington, D.C. He has more than 35 years of experience in the nonprofit sector. In his private practice, Scucci specializes in board development, executive coaching, executive transitions, managing change, team-building, board and staff relations and strategic planning.

Recognition

Deb Bergeron, a personal and professional life coach and founder of Ocean of Possibilities, recently earned the Professional Certified Coach designation by the International Coach Federation by completing over 250 hours of training and logging over 1,400 coaching hours. Bergeron has a private practice in Falmouth and is an affiliate practitioner at True North.
