form dual partnership

PORTLAND — Mercy Hospital and the Maine Red Claws basketball team have created a youth initiative that builds upon a newly formed partnership between the hospital and the sports team.

Maine Red Claws has selected Mercy Hospital as the exclusive hospital and health care provider for the Red Claws organization, with Dr. Peter Ameglio of Mercy serving as the team physician.

Additionally, Mercy Hospital and the Red Claws have created the “Best Shot for Youth Initiative.”

The initiative was formed to raise money for York and Cumberland County students in grades 6-12 to receive free sports physicals at Mercy’s Primary Care locations in Portland, Westbrook, Windham and Standish. Students targeted for the initiative are those who do not have a primary care physician or who are existing Mercy primary care patients.

The Best Shot for Youth Initiative will hold Best Shot free-throw tournaments with area youth, Red Claws staff and players to raise funds for the initiative. The first tournament will take place this fall.

Adult ed program graduates
20 nursing assistants

TOPSHAM — Merrymeeting Adult Education recently held a graduation ceremony for 20 new Certified Nursing Assistants after completing a 170-hour course and a skills and knowledge test administered by the State of Maine.

The CNA graduates are Michelle Aievoli, Jane Alexander, Christine Berry, Monica Carter, Amber Farnham, Mary Gammon, Arlene Greenlaw, Kari Harbaugh, Esther Joefield, Rachael Knight, Barbara Ladd, Shari LaPlante, Andrea Livingston, Toni Pavlovick, Danielle Ramsay, Linda Robbins, Morgan Suta, Jaime Tourigny, Jen Welzel and Lori-Lynn Wilcox-Robson.

Whynot-Vickers
joins LearningWorks

PORTLAND — Jeanne Whynot-Vickers, former interim superintendent of Portland Public Schools, has joined LearningWorks as director of educational excellence.

LearningWorks is a Portland-based organization that offers alternative educational opportunities, juvenile justice and housing programs serving at-risk youth, the immigrant community, and low-income families in Androscoggin, York, and Cumberland counties.

New Ventures

una Winebar, Lounge, and Nightclub, located at 505 Fore St. in Portland, recently held a grand reopening celebration marking “una’s renaissance.” New additions include an expanded bar and nightclub dance area, extended hours, new decor and lighting, new cocktail menu, new menu items and a return of an old favorite, its signature fresh-baked rosemary bread.  

The UPS Store at Millcreek Plaza is now under the ownership of Heather Worroll of South Portland. Store manager Liza Mandile and customer associate Becky Gallagher will continue their positions and be joined by part-time employees Jason Lanoie and Jen Wells.

Brunswick and Auburn-based band, Repeat Offenders, has released its debut LP, “Strange Circumstance,” with local record label, Roadside Manna Records. The funk-rock jam band will be playing an upcoming show at Portland’s Big Easy on Oct. 3. 

Elizabeth MacMullen of Brunswick, a former nurse for 26 years, has launched a new business called Caring Transitions. The company will provide guidance to seniors and their families needing assistance with the process of moving, item appraisals, content liquidation or estate sales.

Portland’s Maine Yacht Center, a full service marina and repair yard, is in the process of installing an 80-ton marine travel lift as part of an extensive expansion project. MYC also recently completed dredging the fairway channel west of the marina, allowing for vessels with 15 feet of draft and 23 feet of beam. The lift is expected to be fully operable in October. 

Fluid Imaging Technologies, Inc. of Yarmouth recently sold their imaging particle analyzer, FlowCAM, to the global marine research consortium, Tara-Oceans Project. 

Harbor Technologies of Brunswick, a provider of composite solutions to marine and infrastructure markets, received a $1.3 million contract to produce and ship 400 composite pilings for a storm retaining wall of the Swan Quarter Watershed Project in Swan Quarter, N.C.  

Portland-based Next Day Art, an art licensing agent and publisher, has acquired greeting card company, Cardmakers, Inc. The New Hampshire-based greeting card manufacturer, which specializes in custom printed boxed greeting cards, will be relocating to Portland. 

Portland-based Berry, Dunn, McNeil & Parker, formerly known as Berry Dunn, recently completed the sale of its retirement plan third party administration practice unit to Downeast Pension Services of New Gloucester. As part of the sale, Berry Dunn employee, Leander MacVane, has joined DPS as a senior account executive. 

Tilson Technology Management has recently launched several new websites for clients, including the State Street Congregational Church of the United Church of Christ, www.statestreetchurch.org; Telephone Association of New England, www.tane.org; and a medical social networking site, www.PracticeCity.com.

Fiddle and violin instructor Hope Hoffman has opened a new studio and art gallery at 43 Main St. in Bowdoinham. Hoffman currently teaches violin/fiddle to students ages three and older in private or group lessons. Instructions on additional instruments may be offered in the future. The musicians of the Portland Symphony Orchestra, Boston Musicians Association and the PSO board of trustees recently approved a four-year labor agreement. The new collective bargaining agreement, retroactive from Sept. 1, 2008 to Aug. 31, 2012, includes level funding of all compensatory items, maintaining minimum guaranteed services, modernized language allowing for scheduling flexibility and new due process procedures for musicians.
