United Way names board,
receives ‘loaned executives’

PORTLAND – United Way of Greater Portland recently held its annual meeting where new board members were elected and volunteers were recognized for their outstanding contributions to the organization.

New board members include James Craig, chief of police, City of Portland; Chip Kelley, senior vice president and manager of commercial banking, Key Bank; and Anne Swift-Kayatta, town councilor, Town of Cape Elizabeth. Chris Emmons, president and CEO of Gorham Savings Bank was elected chair of the board and Al Swallow, associate vice president of finance of Maine Medical Center was elected vice-chair.

Stuart Williams, senior vice president and wealth management regional manager, Maine Bank & Trust was named a new Foundation Board of Trustee. Barbara Wheaton, partner, Pierce Atwood LLP, was newly elected as the chair of the Foundation Board of Trustees.

Bill Caron, CEO of Maine Health, received the United Way of Greater Portland’s Legacy Award. Brian Petrovek, owner and CEO of Portland Pirates and outgoing board chair, received the Bert Andrews Volunteer Spirit Award.

The United Way’s annual fundraising campaign was recently launched with the help of borrowed staff. Through its Loaned Executive Program, United Way requests local companies to support the campaign by providing executives to help its staff fundraise for the entire campaign – from late August through mid-November. The Loaned Executives help reduce the campaign’s overhead costs so more funds can go directly to the United Way programs.

Six local companies signed on to participate in the Loaned Executive Program: Maine Medical Center, Wright Express, Hannaford Bros. Co., L.L.Bean, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield and Gorham Savings Bank.

Emma Lishness, Samantha Minton and Anne Nadzo are also participating in the LEP as sponsored loaned executives. The following businesses provided financial support to sponsor the loaned executives: Bank of America, Baker Newman Noyes, Berry Dunn McNeil & Parker, Fairchild Semiconductor, Preti Flaherty, Pierce Atwood, Verrill Dana, Macdonald Page, LLC, Maine Medical Partners and Verrill Dana.

Yarmouth nonprofit up
for ‘voters choice’ award

YARMOUTH – Maine Rivers is one of three nonprofits selected by Patagonia’s Freeport store to receive up to $2,500 in the “Voice Your Choice” campaign.

“Voice Your Choice” was created by Patagonia to help support local environmental work. The mission of Yarmouth-based Maine Rivers is focused on protecting and restoring the ecological health of Maine’s river systems.

First place winner receives $2,500; the second place winner will receive $1,500; and the third place winner will receive $1,000.

Mid-Coast nonprofits, Sheepscot Valley Conservation Association and Friends of Merrymeeting Bay, were also nominated for the campaign.

Visitors to Patagonia’s Bow Street store can cast a vote from now until Oct. 24.

New Hires, Promotions

Cape Elizabeth resident Stephen “Steppe” Mette, MD, has been promoted from president of the medical staff to chief of critical care at Maine Medical Center.

Michael A. Nelson of Portland, an attorney with Jensen Baird Gardner & Henry, has been named adjunct professor of law for professional responsibility and legal ethics at the University of Maine School of Law.

Roger P. Asch of Portland has joined the law firm of Jensen Baird Gardner & Henry as a member of the firm’s business services, estate planning and probate practice groups.

LearningWorks has hired Joel Russ of South Bristol, former CEO of the Greater Portland Chamber of Commerce, as its new director of development and Susannah Kerest of South Portland, formerly of Demont & Associates, as the director of external relations.

Donald St. Germain, MD, has joined Maine Medical Center as the associate vice president of research and director of the Maine Medical Center Research Institute.

Laurie M. Reed of Cumberland has become a partner of Lebel & Harriman, LLP, a Falmouth-based law firm.

The Northern New England Division of the Salvation Army has hired Elizabeth Badger of Brunswick as the donor relations director, overseeing the major gifts program of the divisional development team based in Portland.

Amanda V. Rand of Falmouth recently joined the investment team at Spinnaker Trust as vice president of business development.

Freeport-based Employee Benefit Management, Inc., has hired Eric Lake as vice president of business development.

Angela Jester has joined the Greater Portland Convention & Visitors Bureau as the convention sales manager.

Pamela Settle of Brunswick was hired by Androscoggin Bank in Lewiston as vice president, commercial loan officer.

Liam McCoy of Cape Elizabeth and Scott Lachance of Saco have become associates with Yarmouth realty office Ian Lane and Associates.

Erika Dupuis of Lyman was promoted to assistant branch manager/loan officer in the Scarborough Branch of Maine Bank & Trust.

Baker Newman Noyes CPAs and consultants, has promoted the following employees at its Portland office: Warren Evans and Matthew Prunier to manager positions; and Andrew Bouchard, Gisele Couturier, Tiffany Gray, Samantha Howe, Stephan McMahon, and Whit Mitchell to audit senior accountant positions.
