Bowdoin Common Good grant
program awards $19,500
BRUNSWICK — The Common Good Grant Program, administered by Bowdoin students, has awarded $19,500 to 10 organizations in the greater Brunswick community.
Th 2010 Common Good Grant recipients include: Brunswick Elementary Schools, to launch a pedometer program for youth; Brunswick Junior High School Music Boosters, for program support; Georgetown Central School, to purchase a furnace to heat an existing greenhouse; Habitat for Humanity of Greater Portland, to purchase a high-efficiency boiler for a Freeport home; Independence Association ofBrunswick, to support participation in the Special Olympics; Midcoast Maine Community Action of Bath, to provide a free tax return assistance project for low-income people; The Morris Farm Trust of Wiscasset, to fund a garden project at the Wiscasset Primary School; Oasis Health Network, Inc. of Brunswick, to purchase an EKG machine for the Oasis Clinic; People Plus of Brunswick, to implement Project Win-Win, to provide transportation and support services to local elders; Volunteers of America Northern New England, Inc. of Brunswick, to support Camp POSTCARD, a retreat for at-risk youth to connect with law enforcement.
The Common Good Grant Program was established in 2001 by an anonymous Bowdoin alumnus, who established an annual gift of $10,000 to be allocated to local non-profits. This year, the base of $10,000 was supplemented by $9,500 in funds raised by students on the Common Good Grant Extension Committee.
The grant application is available each year in mid-November and can be downloaded from the McKeen Center Web site at bowdoin.edu/mckeen-center/index.shtml.
Hannaford Bros. Co. donates
$50K to Camp Sunshine
SCARBOROUGH — Hannaford Supermarkets recently made a $50,000 donation to Camp Sunshine, the Casco retreat center for children with life-threatening illnesses and their families.
The money will provide a free week long camp vacation for 40 children with cancer, along with their parents and siblings, in 2010.
Since 2006, Hannaford and the Hannaford Charitable Foundation has donated $200,000 to Camp Sunshine. The year-round program is free of charge and staffed mostly by volunteers. For more information about Camp Sunshine or to volunteer, please call 655-3800 or visit campsunshine.org.
Lifetime Service Award
presented to John Malley
GORHAM — John Malley of South Portland, longtime associate supervisor of the Cumberland County Soil and Water Conservation District, was presented with a Lifetime of Service Award at the Cumberland County Soil and Water Conservation District annual meeting held recently in Gorham.
Malley has served on the District’s Board of Supervisors for over 25 years. For nearly 30 years he was the district conservationist of the Soil Conservation Service and later operated an environmental consulting business.
The Conservation District Board also granted him the title of Supervisor Emeritus.
Robbins earns Unsung
YARMOUTH — Susan Robbins, the Yarmouth athletic director, was presented with the Unsung Heroine Award at the Maine Principals’ Association’s 12th annual Mentoring Women in Sports conference in Augusta.
The award was given in recognition of Robbins’ leadership of Yarmouth athletic programs and commitment to mentoring young women in the athletic programs.

Allspeed Bicycle & Ski has moved from 1041 Washington Ave. in Portland to 72 Auburn St., across from Northgate Plaza and Shaws. Ownership of the store has been transferred from original owner Gary Buch to Chris Carleton and Mike Davies. The store will now be known as Allspeed Cyclery & Snow. Allspeed is a full service bicycle and ski retailer specializing in all types of bicycles and accessories, and backcountry, telemark, and alpine touring ski gear.
Cardente Real Estate has expanded their operations and purchased an office in the Old Port at 322 Fore Street, Portland. The commercial real estate brokerage company, with six commercial brokers handles all aspects of the sale and leasing of commercial real estate in Maine and New Hampshire. Tractor Supply Company is opening its ninth Maine location at 24 Farley Road in Brunsiwck. The new Brunswick Tractor Supply Company store will employ 12 to 17 full and part time employees at its new 19,097 square-foot store. Construction is tentatively set to be completed in August 2010.
