Five receive Children’s
Advocacy Awards

PORTLAND —The Children’s Advocacy Council recently named the recipients of the 2009 Children’s Advocacy Award. Four individuals and one town were nominated by community members in recognition of exceptional service to children and families.

Awardees include Lisa Cook, parent advocate, co-developer of the Parents as Partners program; Zoe Miller, director of the Parkside Neighborhood Center; Peggy Hinman of the Root Cellar in Portland; John Thaxter, volunteer at Edgewood, a Youth Alternatives Ingraham mental health and substance abuse treatment facility for teens and young adults; and The Town of Cumberland, for addressing and managing the concern for community sex offender notifications and disclosures of sexual abuse.

Macdonald named president
of Maine Bar Foundation

HALLOWELL — Attorney Arnold Macdonald was recently elected president of the Maine Bar Foundation, a statewide nonprofit that supports law-related charitable work.

Macdonald, a South Freeport resident, is a shareholder and member of Bernstein Shur’s business law, construction, and real estate practice groups.

Nancy’s Maine Choice
opens in Brunswick

BRUNSWICK— Nancy Randolph, owner of Just Write Books, a Topsham publishing house, has expanded her business to include a retail store of books and fine Maine crafts called Nancy’s Maine Choice.

The store is located inside the front entrance of Fort Andross at 14 Maine St., Brunswick, and will serve as a marketplace for local artisans and writers.

Nancy’s Maine Choice also features a conference room where writers’ workshops will be held on a regular basis. Registration for workshops is available at www.jstwrite.com. Store hours are 2-8 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays; and 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturdays.

Governor grants
Fitness Awards

AUGUSTA —The Maine Governor’s Council on Physical Activity recently presented its eleventh annual Maine Fitness Awards at a recent ceremony. The awards are given in recognition of exceptional efforts made to support physical fitness and sports programs in Maine.

William Dexter, MD, of Cumberland, was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award. Dr. Dexter, director of Maine Medical Center’s Family Medicine – Sports Medicine program, was nominated by staff at Maine Medical Center’s Division of Community and Preventive Medicine for his contributions to fitness programs in the state, and for teaching sports medicine at the hospital.

Other local recipients include, Maine Senior Games of Scarborough, Adult Award; and National Semiconductor of South Portland, Healthy Workplace (Medium Business Award).

New Ventures

James McBride and John McVeigh recently opened Compositions, a gallery featuring fine flowers, artwork and jewelry by John McVeigh Designs, at 13 Free St., Portland.

Andrea Rouda, recently relocated from Washington, D.C., has opened The Wonderful Gallery at 152 Maine St. in downtown Freeport. 

Maine Credit Unions has recently launched a new consumer website, www.mainecreditunions.org where customers can access a comprehensive directory listing of credit unions in the Maine Credit Union League.

Planet Dog has expanded distribution in Canada and the United Kingdom via new partnerships with pet product distributors Natural Pet Distributors and the Ianick Trading Company.

Roxanne Ashey Photography recently celebrated its grand reopening at its new location at 126 Main St., Topsham, across from Mt. Ararat High School.  

Martin’s Point Health Care in Portland held a groundbreaking ceremony for its new $16 million, 42,000 square-foot health care center at 331 Veranda St. Completion of the medical center is scheduled for December, 2010. 

The Freeport Square Satellite Gallery has opened at the Hilton Garden Inn Great American Grill Restaurant in Freeport. The gallery will feature artwork including paintings, photography, prints and mixed media. 

Law firm Verrill Dana, with offices in Portland and Boston, has newly established a higher education industry group for public and private colleges and universities and a probate litigation practice group for clients with complex probate matters.

Professional Appointments

Paul Chamberlain of South Portland was recently named to the Town & Country Federal Credit Union board of directors.  

The Environmental and Energy Technology Council of Maine, E2 Tech, a statewide organization of businesses and professionals supporting Maine’s green economy, has named Phil Coupe of Cape Elizabeth, co-founder of ReVision Energy; and Tim Vrabel of Bath, deputy director of the energy programs division in Maine’s Public Utilities Commission, to its board of directors.

William Lunt III, of Falmouth, was elected vice president of the board at the annual meeting of the Portland Water District Board of Trustees. 

Maine Health Access Foundation has appointed Frank McGinty of Cumberland, executive vice president/treasurer of MaineHealth, to its board of trustees; and Carter Friend of Portland, vice president of community impact at United Way of Greater Portland, to its community advisory committee. 

Alicia Curtis, an associate with the Portland law firm Lambert Coffin Haenn, was elected to the board of the Portland Chamber Music Festival. 

Two trustees nominated to join the board for for Opportunity Farm for Boys to Girls include H. Lowell Brown of Falmouth, attorney; and Fredric W. Williams of Portland, president/managing director for the Investment Management & Consulting Group. Also, blog writer Karen Watterson of Yarmouth was nominated to serve on the Leadership Council. 

Kim Laramy of Portland-based Ethos Marketing and Design has joined Northeast Hearing and Speech Center’s board of directors.  

The 2009 Harpswell Business Association officers elected at the annual board meeting are, Richard Moseley, president; Jennifer Laskey- VerPlanck, vice president; and five directors, Peter Boisvert, Donna Dillman, Robert Hutchins, Roy Tassinari and Deb Wolfenden. 

Sherry Hanson of Brunswick was elected to the board of the Maine Media Women group.
