Healthy Portland recognized SSS Brothers Smoke Shop for its efforts to curb marketing of tobacco to youth. It was named a Star Store as a responsible retailer that takes seriously its role in reducing the visibility of tobacco advertising to kids.

The Portland Symphony Orchestra is one of 23 American orchestras recently selected by the League of American Orchestras for a 2013-14 Getty Education and Community Investment Grant. The grant was awarded to help fund the orchestra’s Music & Wellness program, and is in recognition of the Portland Symphony’s innovation and dedication to increasing its relevance to the community. This is the second year the PSO has received this grant.

New England Rehabilitation Hospital of Portland, a joint venture of Maine Medical Center and HealthSouth, has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval for its hip fracture program by demonstrating compliance with the commission’s national state-of-the-art standards for health care quality and safety in disease-specific care.

Giving Back

Androscoggin Bank awarded five grants, totaling $19,300, from the bank’s MainStreet Foundation in the fourth quarter of 2013. The grants to New Beginnings, Community Concepts, Community Dental, Jobs for Maine Graduates, and Safe Families for Children will benefit youth in Maine. MainStreet Foundation grants are provided for local organizations to support the projects, programs and initiatives that foster the development and welfare of young people. Grants are typically announced four times a year.

New Hires, Promotions and Appointments

Fluid Imaging Technologies of Scarborough hired Michael Horgan as product marketing manager. Horgan will be responsible for managing the Flowcam product line and developing product and market requirements for new solutions that provide value to customers across all of Fluid Imaging Technologies’ global markets.

Stephanie Williams and Anthony Manhart were elected directors and shareholders of Perkins Thompson, Portland. Williams’ practice focuses on commercial litigation, including complex secured transaction matters, foreclosure actions on behalf of large regional and national banks, commercial and retail collections, personal property replevin matters, and commercial and residential evictions. Manhart’s practice focuses on bankruptcy and creditors’ and debtors’ rights, representation of Chapter 7 trustees, and the representation of various parties in formal insolvency and collection proceedings and out-of-court workouts.

Bernstein Shur named Ronald Schneider Jr. and Matt Tarasevich as co-chairmen of the firm’s Labor and Employment Practice Group, ranked in Chambers USA as top in the field.  They were chosen to lead the group based on their expertise in the field and strong leadership experience.

Stephen P. Henderson joined ecomaine as recycling operations manager. Henderson has more than a decade of experience in recycling and facilities operations, most recently as the operations manager at the Maine Apple Co. Ecomaine is the nonprofit, recycling and waste-to-energy operation that serves 25 percent of the state’s population.

Micah Malloy joined the WCSH 6 team as local sales manager. Malloy arrives from Time Warner Cable, where he led the sales effort in central and coastal Maine as local sales manager since 2007.
