Nominations open for
Family Business Award

PORTLAND — Nominations are now being accepted by the Institute for Family-Owned Business for its 11th annual Maine Family Business Awards.

To be eligible for nomination, a company must be a Maine-based business owned or operated by two or more members of the same family.

The Best Family Business Award is given to three companies that have a positive impact on the business community. A winner is selected in the following categories: businesses with less than 25 employees; more than 25 employees; and an award is given for community service.

An independent judging panel selects winners based upon the success of the business, positive business and family linkages, contributions to the community and industry, family participation, work environment, communication, and innovative business practices or strategies.

Last year’s winners were The Lobster Shack at Two Lights in Cape Elizabeth, the Maddy Corson Award to a small business with less than 25 employees; Earle W. Noyes & Sons, Portland Van Line operator, the Leon Gorman Award to a large business with more than 25 employees; and Lionel Plante Associates, Peaks Island marine transportation firm, the Shep Lee Award for community service.

The nomination deadline is Feb. 15, with a March 13 deadline for the company to submit a complete application and all supporting materials.
 
The awards ceremony takes place on May 17 at the Marriott Hotel in South Portland.

Awards

The Douglas Title Company, co-owned by Abby and Don Douglas, was recently honored by the Yarmouth Chamber of Commerce with the 2009 Beacon Award for Business Leadership.  This annual award is presented to an individual or organization making a positive contribution to the Yarmouth community. Douglas Title Company, with offices in Yarmouth and Augusta, provides closing and title services for the real estate industry.

At the Immigrant Legal Advocacy Project annual awards dinner, Portland law firm Verrill Dana was honored as Pro Bono Firm of the Year. Over the past year, 10 Verrill Dana attorneys donated over 1,100 hours working on 21 immigration cases. Attorney Jennifer Archer of Kelly, Remmel and Zimmerman in Portland was presented with the Attorney of the Year Award for her outstanding work on the ILAP’s pro bono panel.

KG Partners, a Portland-based advertising and public relations agency, earned four Davey Awards from the International Academy of the Visual Arts.  The Davey Awards honor outstanding creative work by small creative firms. Out of 4,000 entries submitted worldwide, KG earned a gold award for the Ball Don’t Lie Web site; and three silver awards for Can You Afford Not To? print ads, the Kitty Test Web site, and the Rosemary Hallgarten Web site.

At the 88th annual meeting and conference of the Maine Innkeepers Association, Jeanne Carpentier, general manager of the Hilton Garden Inn Freeport Downtown was presented with the Community Service Award for 2009.

Portland Harbor Hotel, located at 468 Fore St. in the Old Port, was selected for inclusion in the Conde Nast Johansens Recommended Hotel Guide for 2010. This is the third consecutive year the newly remodeled hotel has been included in the international hotel guide.

Specialty gift shop Emerald City, located at 611 Congress St. won first place in Portland’s Annual Winter Window Walk for its festive and creative window display. Jewelry store Folia, at 50 Exchange St., and the mensroom salon & lounge, at 8 City Center, tied for second place in the window display contest.

Jessie Grearson of Falmouth won a one-year supply of Turkey Hill ice cream for her chocolate peppermint ice Cream torte recipe she entered in the Turkey Hill Dairy Ultimate Holiday Recipe Contest.

New Hires, Promotions

Law firm Drummond & Drummond, LLP in Portland has hired Julia Greenleaf Pitney of Brunswick as an associate member of the firm’s litigation group and M. Thomas Trenholm has joined the firm with a focus in the areas of finance for schools and businesses.

Ellen McCann Labbe of Portland, has joined the Portland Water District as an environmental educator.

Lisa V. Blake recently joined True North Health Center in Falmouth as a practitioner of meditation services.

317 Main Street Community Music Center has hired John Williams of North Yarmouth as executive director.

Fluid Imaging Technologies of Yarmouth has hired made three new hires: Tom Parker of Lisbon Falls, manufacturing production assistant; Andrew Leigh of Freeport, electronics technician; and Josh Geib of Wiscasset, industrial sales.

Portland-based law firm Pierce Atwood LLP hired Lauren Ketchum of Portland as the marketing and business development coordinator and promoted Amber Elliott of Topsham from marketing coordinator to assistant marketing manager in charge of events and communications.
 
Sanctuary Holistic Health & Yoga Center of Yarmouth has hired Christine Vanacore, a Guided Imagery Hypnotherapist and Universal Life Minister, and is accepting new clients for individual practice and small group sessions.

Parkview Adventist Medical Center has appointed Catherine Palmer of Saco as manager of marketing and development marketing manager at its Brunswick facility and has named Dr. Joseph Feller of Brunswick to the medical staff as a board certified general surgeon, with special interests in surgical oncology, breast surgery and endoscopy.

Jill Ketchen of Yarmouth has joined Norton Insurance as a customer service representative at its Cumberland Foreside office.

The JTG Foundation, a private foundation established by Tom Gorman of Yarmouth, has hired Gail  Kezer of Brunswick as its first program manager.  

Elmina B. Sewall Foundation has hired Megan Shore of Freeport to serve as grants manager.

Allen & Selig Realty of North Yarmouth and Bath has hired Win Reed of Woolwich as a broker based out of the company’s Bath office.
