PORTLAND – Norman Hanson DeTroy, a Maine law firm with offices in Portland and Lewiston, has recently announced its joint sponsorship of the the Maine Winter Sports Center and the U.S. Biathlon Team.

The Maine Winter Sports Center is devoted to re-establishing skiing as a lifestyle in Maine. One aspect of the center is helping build a model of community-run non-profit ski areas that can serve as economic foundations for rural Maine communities. Junior Achievement
holds job shadow day

PORTLAND – Junior Achievement of Maine, a nonprofit economic education organization, recently launched its Job Shadow 2010 program, connecting Maine students in the sixth through eighth grade with business mentors across the state.

Job Shadow Day is part of a nationwide initiative of Junior Achievement that enables students to get an up-close look at different career opportunities.

More than 800 students throughout Maine connected with approximately 250 mentors in the southern Maine and the greater Bangor area.

Portland Symphony Orchestra has hired Leah Robertson as new associate director, development and special projects, overseeing the fundraising and donor stewardship strategies. In addition, the PSO has extended music director Robert Moody’s initial three-year contract for five years, through the PSO’s 91st season in 2015-2016.

Scarborough retirement community Piper Shores has named Michael Bierley of Portland as executive director overseeing the day-to-day financial, marketing and strategic planning operations of the community.

David E. Hughes of Cumberland Foreside, a former Unum executive, has been named the director of development at the University of Southern Maine, responsible for designing and managing USM’s fundraising activities.

David Paul has joined Keller Williams Realty in Portland as a broker with over 25 years experience in real estate.

AlliedCook Construction, a Scarborough-based commercial construction management firm, has hired JP Schwartz as an engineering technician and Catherine MacDonald, LEED A.P., as records manager.

The Bangor Region Chamber of Commerce has hired John Porter of South Portland as the new president of the Chamber, and will serve as its chief executive officer for the Chamber and its affiliated programs and services.

Ethan Gamage has joined Opus Consulting Group, a management consulting firm in Portland.

Lois Skillings, RN, has been promoted to executive vice president of Mid Coast Health Services, which includes the Mid Coast Hospital, CHANS Home Health Care, and the Mid Coast Senior Health Center. Deborah MacLeod, RN, will take the place of Skillings as vice president for nursing and patient care for Mid Coast Hospital.

Jenn Libby has been selected as the general manager of the Hampton Inn in Bath, which is expected to open this June. Previously, Libby was general manager of the Comfort Suites in Freeport.

North Yarmouth Academy has hired Holly Dana of Yarmouth as assistant director of admissions and has hired Shannon Gallagher to develop and teach NYA’s new fifth grade class, beginning in September 2010.

FairPoint Communications has named Michael C. Reed as Maine state president responsible for regulatory matters, governmental relations, and economic development.

New Ventures

Falmouth-based United Insurance has acquired the Mexico Agency business of Northeast Bank Insurance Group. The office, acquired by Northeast in 2004, writes approximately $900,000 in annual premiums and employs three workers, all of whom will continue on with either Northeast or United.

Michael Robichaud, senior vice president, wealth management, financial advisor and Lynn Foley, financial advisor of the Robichaud Team at Morgan Stanley Smith Barney have relocated their Portland office from 465 Congress St. to 100 Middle St., third floor.

The Office of Naval Research has awarded a $600,000 software development contract to Portland-based Maine Marine Composites, LLC., to design tools to aid construction of safer high-speed special operations boats.

The cardiologists of Maine Cardiology Associates and Cardiovascular Consultants of Maine are joining MaineHealth and entering into an employment arrangement. Cardiovascular Consultants of Maine currently has 19 practicing specialists and Maine Cardiology Associates has 21.
