New Hires, Promotions

The Council on International Educational Exchange, headquartered in Portland, has hired James P. Pellow as its new chief executive officer and president to succeed Stevan K. Trooboff upon his retirement. Pellow will be relocating to Portland and will start at CIEE in June 2011.

Portland-based Pulp+Wire has hired Daniel Snyder as a production manager in its creative department, managing creative projects and leading in-house video and music production services.

Peter Bernier has joined Hancock Lumber as vice president regional general manager based out of Hancock’s Brunswick location.

Bangor Savings Bank has named Amy Keating of Portland as vice president and branch manager of its Falmouth location, and Maria Edwards of Pownal as assistant branch manager of the Falmouth branch. The Route 1 Falmouth branch is expected to open in March of 2011.

Alternative Merchant Capital, a financial services company in Portland, recently hired Matt Thompson as an independent sales representative.

Law firm Drummond Woodsum has hired attorneys Peter Klein and Michael Murray, both of Portland, as members of its business services group.

WCSH 6 Portland and WLBZ 2 Bangor recently promoted Joanne Small of South Portland from accounting manager to business manager.

Brian Eng has joined Opus Consulting Group, a management consulting firm in Portland, as a strategic advisor.

Julie Nadeau of Portland has rejoined the Michelle Raber State Farm Insurance Agency in Scarborough as an account representative.

Maine College of Art has hired Mary Ann Benson as assistant director of student affairs, career and entrepreneurial services.

Legacy Publishing Company, publisher of personal development products for families, has hired Jim DeWolfe of Falmouth as vice president of sales, leading sales representatives at its sales centers in Westbrook and Auburn. Legacy has also promoted Ryan Wing of Scarborough from operations manager to director of operations.

The Maine Center for Enterprise Development has recently named Don Gooding as executive director.

Scarborough-based Piper Shores retirement community has hired Peggy Pineo as administrator, to help manage the day-to-day operations of the retirement community.

People’s United Bank, Southern Maine, has hired Karen Michaud as senior vice president, cash management, at the bank’s Portland office. Paul Collins has joined the bank’s Scarborough office as a business banker, vice president.

Will Everitt of Portland was recently rehired as development director of Friends of Casco Bay/Casco Baykeeper. Previously, Everitt served as the Maine state director of the League of Young Voters.

Hurley Travel Experts has hired Anne Mazer of Scarborough and Joline Sullivan of Durham as corporate travel consultants.

Portland web design firm, iBec Creative, has hired Sarah Frisk of Portland as a junior web developer.

Lori A. Desjardins and Liam J. Vesely have been named partners in the law firm Pierce Atwood. Desjardins has served in the firm’s banking & financial services practice group in 2006 and Vesely joined Pierce Atwood in 2009 as Counsel in the litigation and business practice groups.

Maine Distilleries in Freeport, creators of Cold River Vodkas and Gin, has named Joe Swanson of New Gloucester as sales manager for its distribution operations in Maine and New Hampshire.

University of New England has appointed James J. Koelbl, D.D.S., M.S., M.J. of Claremont, Calif., as the new Dean of the College of Dental Medicine. Dr. Koelbl was the founding dean of the College of Dental Medicine at Western University of Health Sciences, Pomona, Calif., and will join UNE in April 2011.

Time Warner Cable has promoted Paul Schonewolf of Cape Elizabeth to area vice president, responsible for all of Time Warner Cable’s business operations in New England. Schonewolf previously served as the company’s vice president for technical operations.

Anchor Realty in Falmouth has recently hired John Holt and Annette Kincaid as real estate sales associates, and Michele Clancy as a real estate associate broker. They will be serving the real estate needs of Cumberland County, with a particular focus on Chebeague Island.

Grants, Donations

Portland-based nonprofit, LearningWorks, has recently received three grants totalling $107,000. The Rines/Thompson Fund of the Maine Community Foundation awarded a $5,000 grant to LearningWorks to be used for its English Language Program. The Edward H. Daveis Benevolent Fund of the Maine Community Foundation awarded $2,000 towards Literacy Volunteers of Greater Portland, a program of LearningWorks. The Walmart Foundation presented a $100,000 donation to LearningWorks for its English Language Program. LearningWorks is a social service agency providing learning opportunities for at-risk youth, the immigrant community, and low-income families.

Southern Maine Community College has been awarded a $70,000 grant to participate in a national network to train instructors in solar photovoltaics. The grant will enhance student opportunities in the renewable energy field and support the work of the Electrical Engineering Technologies Department. Funding for the grant is provided by the U.S. Department of Energy in coordination with the Hudson Valley Community College in New York and by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

The Museum of African Culture received a $5,000 grant from the Rines/Thompson Funds of Maine Community Foundation to support the museum’s educational outreach programs for grades K-12 and community organizations.

Greater Portland Landmarks has been awarded a $4,000 grant from the Rines-Thompson Fund of the Maine Community Foundation for strategic planning and a $4,300 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities for a preservation assessment of the Frances W. Peabody Research Library.

The Coca-Cola Foundation has awarded $50,000 to Maine Medical Center in Portland. The award is part of $4 million in grants to support active lifestyles, education and environmental programs across the country.

Verizon Wireless recently awarded Family Crisis Services a $1,000 grant to assist the agency in providing holiday support for survivors of domestic violence and their children. The grant was part of Verizon’s HopeLine program dedicated to preventing domestic violence.

The Maine Drug Enforcement Agency has recently awarded $158,683 to four drug prevention programs in Maine focused on reducing prescription drug abuse in the state. Locally, Communities Promoting Health Coalition, a program at People’s Regional Opportunity Program, was awarded $54,724. The coalition will use the grant to implement an informational program, geared towards young adults, that will increase awareness of the risks associated with the misuse of prescription drugs.

The Bangor Savings Bank Foundation recently announced its third-quarter grants totaling $60,000. The 19 grants include: Androscoggin Home Health Services, $2,000; Big Brothers Big Sisters of Midcoast Maine, $5,000; Cancer Support Center of Maine, $2,000; Challenger Learning Center of Maine, $2,500; Community Financial Literacy, $2,500; Franco-American Heritage Center, $5,000; Frannie Peabody Center, $2,500; Hammond Street Senior Center, $3,500; Main Street Skowhegan, $2,500; Maine Media Workshops, $2,500; Mano en Mano/Hand in Hand, $2,000; Orono Bog Boardwalk, $2,000; Penquis Community Action, $2,000; Somerset Career & Technical Center, $5,000; St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center, $10,000; Tri-County Mental Health, $2,500; Trinity Jubilee Center, $2,000; Wayside Theatre Inc., $2,500; and WinterKids, $2,000.
