YARMOUTH — Non-profit organization Yarmouth Arts is accepting grant applications for projects that support the development of innovative cultural, arts, and heritage projects. 

Projects must demonstrate a broad community benefit and directly relate to the mission of Yarmouth Arts. 

Grants will range from $250 to $1,000.

Any organization, individual or municipal office in the town of Yarmouth is eligible to apply.  Deadline for submitting grant applications is May 31.

Falmouth photographer
opens new business

FALMOUTH — Karen Caxton Smith of Falmouth has recently launched a new photography business, Karen Caxton Smith Photography, specializing in wedding photography, portraits, children, commercial and head shots.

Additionally, she is the documentary photographer for a project highlighting the plight of wolves called Wolf Song, and is currently affiliated with Diane York Wedding Planners and chief photographer for Best Ever You magazine.

Caxton Smith, who entered her first black and white photo contest at age 8, has been featured in local art galleries and has completed photography coursework from the New York Institute of Photography and Maine College of Art.

Bicycle Coalition offers
free BikeMaine calendar

PORTLAND — The Bicycle Coalition of Maine has produced a free calendar that lists hundreds of Maine bicycling events in 2010.  

The BikeMaine Event Calendar features 62 weekly rides, 173 special events and a listing of Maine bike clubs, organizations and bicycle shops.

Copies of the free calendar can be found at bicycle shops and sports stores throughout Maine. An online version of the calendar is available at BikeMaine.org.

Habitat offers home repair
program in Mid-Coast area

BATH — Habitat for Humanity/7 Rivers Maine is now offering a year-round home repair program for  low-income homeowners who are residents of Lincoln and Sagadahoc Counties or the towns of Brunswick and Harpswell.  

Habitat’s Home Repair Program offers qualified homeowners a very low-interest loan of up to $5,000, to be paid back over 5 to 10 years, to make home improvements that improve safety, health, and energy efficiency.

The program provides funding for improvements such as leaking roofs, unsafe steps, handicapped accessible ramps and energy efficiency improvements like adding insulation and sealing air-leaks.

SMCC receives $300K for
health technology program

SOUTH PORTLAND — Southern Maine Community College has received a grant for nearly $300,000 to offer students a Health Information Technology Program focusing on the latest electronic medical record-keeping systems.

SMCC is part of a 23-member, 12-state consortium led by Tidewater Community College in Virginia that will receive more than $16 million total from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

The college will focus on three primary health technology roles: practice workflow and information management redesign specialists, clinician/practitioner consultants, and technical/software support staff.

The program will begin in August 2010.

The Sun Media Group has hired Kevin Qualls of Freeport as web sales and development manager, responsible for maintaining and supporting Sun Media Group online sales and developing additional programs with online retailers. Sun Media publications include Sun Journal and The Forecaster, as well as 11 other publications and their websites in Maine and New Hampshire.

Fiddlehead Center for the Arts in Scarborough has hired Kris Dorer of Scarborough as its new executive director, in charge of day to day operations, developing new programs, community outreach and cultural offerings.

Jessica Gorton, formerly of Brunswick’s Sweet Leaves Teahouse and Restaurant, is the newest event associate responsible for event planning, sales and marketing with Belle Fête Events and Catering in Brunswick.

Atlantic Physical Therapy has hired Stephanie Krispin, Doctor of Physical Therapy, as a staff physical therapist at its office in Falmouth.

Tilson Technology Management, an IT consulting company in Portland, has recently made three new additions to its professional team. Timothy LaBreck of Buxton, joins Tilson as a project manager; Joseph Rizza of Portland, joins Tilson as a consultant; and Lindsey O’Donnell of Scarborough, joins Tilson as the manager of accounting and administration.

Pam DiPietro Hale of Falmouth Foreside has joined Maine Bank & Trust’s Yarmouth branch as vice president, small business loan officer. Maine Bank & Trust has also hired Kregg Jarvais of Windham as the commercial workout and recovery officer in the commercial banking group in Portland.      

Keith R. Damon has joined Berry Dunn McNeil & Parker, CPAs and Management Consultants, in the Portland office as a senior consultant.

Karen Jones
of Falmouth, a member of the Portland Board of Realtors, recently joined Keller Williams Realty as an associate broker.

Portland Law firm Verrill Dana has hired William J. Shannon as a partner in the business law department at its Portland office.

Catherine Gaynor has joined Women to Women Healthcare as a family nurse practitioner at its Yarmouth office.

Spinnaker Trust, a Portland-based wealth management firm specializing in investment management and trust services, has hired Karen Philbrick of Gorham as the tax and trust administration assistant.
