Patriotic quilt featured in national magazine

An American flag pattern, “Born on the 4th,” created by Cumberland resident Beth Maitland, will appear in the May/June 2014 issue of McCall’s Quilting magazine. Maitland, owner of Impressions in Fabric, made four flag quilts, the first one shortly after Sept. 11, 2001. The next two were made 10 years later when the pattern was written. The final version was created in 2013 at the request of the magazine. Maitland’s quilt, along with 140 other works by local quilt artists, will be displayed at the Calico Quilt Show on April 26 and 27 at the Rowe School, 52 School St., Yarmouth, 846-3771.

Portland design firm nominated for Webby Award

Pulp+Wire, a Portland-based branding and design firm, has been nominated for Best Green Website in the 18th Annual Webby Awards. Hailed by The New York Times as the Internet’s highest honor, the Webby Awards are the leading international award honoring excellence on the Internet. This year, Pulp+Wire is nominated in the Green category for its work with FindaSpring.com, a local nonprofit resource for finding natural spring water sites all over the world. In 2013, the firm was nominated for its work with the SALT Institute for Documentary Studies’ website in the education category.

Awards

“Sea Turtles Up Close” was awarded the 2014 Silver Medal in the Mom’s Choice Award, named among the best in family-friendly media, products and services. The award was granted in the category for the juvenile, non-fiction. This honor is the second Mom’s Choice Award for author Jennifer R. Nolan, of Falmouth, and photographer Jim Abernethy; the first was for their 2011 release of “The Secret of Pig Island,” a children’s book written in rhyme.

Giving Back

On April 4, president Erika Benson of Bath Sunrise Rotary Club presented a check for $1,000 to Oasis Health Network, which serves the Bath/Brunswick areas. Richard Corbin, medical director, and Andree Appel, clinical director, spoke to the club and accepted the gift. The funds will go toward general operating expenses.

New Hires, Promotions and Appointments

MJ Taylor has joined Keller Williams Realty. Taylor lives in Brunswick, and exclusively represents buyers and sellers in the greater Brunswick area. She serves on the Merrymeeting Board of Realtors as chairwoman of community services, and is a member of the Brunswick Downtown Association.

Samantha Linnell, Todd Marquis and Jessey Allen have joined Winxnet, Portland-based IT solutions provider. Linnell was hired as a project coordinator; Marquis as help desk technician; and Allen as technical support specialist.

Verrill Dana announced the expansion of its intellectual property group with the addition of Rita S. Heimes, who will be joining as counsel. In addition to working on traditional intellectual property matters, Heimes brings a special interest in the intersection of law and technology, specifically as it relates to cybersecurity and data privacy.

Patrick LaVoie has joined Norton Insurance Financial as sales manager. For more than 25 years, LaVoie served as president of the Dunlap Agency. Most recently, he held the position of regional president at One Beacon Insurance.

Norton Financial Services announced Kim Gagne has joined the company as executive assistant.

New Ventures and Expansions

James B. Barns, Zachary I. Greenfield and Patrick D. Thornton have formed a new firm, Barns Greenfield Thornton, for the general practice of law at 361 U.S. Route 1 in Falmouth.

Bean Group announced that longtime real estate broker Marcia Jansen will now be expanding her business into the Cumberland County area. Jansen has been associated with Bean Group for two years and has 30 years of experience in the New Hampshire and Vermont markets.

Recognition

The ACLU of Maine will give the annual Justice Louise Scolnik Award to Falmouth resident Jack Simmons on May 1 in Freeport. In a legal career spanning 50 years, Simmons has distinguished himself as a passionate advocate for the rights of the accused, fighting for Miranda rights, the presumption of innocence and equal protection under the law.
