Expansions

Bull Moose has announced plans to expand its current location at 151 Maine St., Brunswick. It will now occupy the entire first floor in what is called “The Bull Moose Building.” Bull Moose will use the additional space to expand its selection of books. The store will remain open during renovations, which will be completed by mid-November.

Giving Back

More than 920 residents from the Portland area joined the Alzheimer’s Association’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s and united in a movement to reclaim the future for millions on Sept. 28. Participants raised more than $130,000 to fund Alzheimer’s care, support and research programs.

Grants & Donations

The South Portland Parks, Recreation and Waterfront Department is the recipient of a of $15,000 donation from Port Harbor Marine for the purchase and installation of an outdoor ice rink within Wainwright Farms Recreational Complex. The donation was acquired by the Rotary Club of South Portland-Cape Elizabeth, through the Soucy family of Port Harbor Marine. The ice rink will be used for events at Winterfest 2014, a new collaborative effort between the Rotary Club and the City of South Portland. In addition to the Winterfest, the rink will be used for the enjoyment of all in the South Portland and surrounding communities throughout the winter months.

University of Southern Maine art professor Raphael DiLuzio and his academic team have been awarded a 2 1/2-year, $192,000 grant from the National Science Foundation Transforming Undergraduate Education in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics program to take creative-thinking processes from the art studio into undergraduate science and technology classrooms. DiLuzio and his colleagues plan to research and develop teaching modules for creative thinking to be introduced to educators at the university.

New Hires, Promotions & Appointments

Ross Taliaferro has joined the Yarmouth Boat Yard as a sales representative. Taliaferro attended Kents Hill School in Augusta and Washington College in Maryland. After school he held a number of positions including a year in the Caribbean as a deckhand on a 150-foot yacht. Most recently he served in sales and marketing roles for several software startups in Boston.

Suzanne Magoon joins Winxnet, a Portland-based IT solutions provider, as a user experience designer. Magoon has more than 12 years of experience in visual and UI web design. Most recently, she worked as a senior web designer for the website services group at Fidelity Investments in Boston.

Recognition

Megan Moynihan, of South Portland, has been selected from 12 applicants for the 2013 Martin Dibner Memorial Fellowship for Maine Writers by The Maine Writers and Publishers Alliance. Moynihan will attend the MWPA’s 2013 Fall Writing Retreat in Kennebunkport, all-expenses paid, and work with instructor Charlotte Agell in the young adult and middle reader workshop.

The National Association of Social Workers Maine Chapter named Gregg Frame, of Cape Elizabeth, and Adam Taylor, of Falmouth, of the law firm Taylor, McCormack & Frame LLC, as its Citizens of the Year at NASW’s Annual Conference on Sept. 26. The two were honored for their work on behalf of 550 social workers and clinicians.

Maine Venture Fund, formerly known as Small Enterprise Growth Fund, presented awards to three of its portfolio companies at the fund’s annual CEO recognition dinner at the Inn at Brunswick Station. Portland-based Coast of Maine Organic Products Inc., was named Leadership Team of the Year. The Achievement Award was presented to Harbor Technologies LLC, of Brunswick, and the Public Benefit Award went to Orono-based Cerahelix Inc.

The National Housing & Rehabilitation Association named Elm Terrace apartments in Portland as the winner of the 2013 J. Timothy Anderson Award for Excellence in Historic Rehabilitation-Best Historic Rehabilitation Project Involving New Construction. The awards honor outstanding rehabilitation and preservation projects. Elm Terrace, developed by Community Housing of Maine, was the only project in New England to win a Timmy Award this year.

Holbrook Health Center at Piper Shores in Scarborough received an Innovative Programming Award from the Maine Health Care Association for Memory Care Planning and Development. The MCHA annually honors nursing care providers that have designed and implemented an outstanding program that has demonstrated success in improving resident quality of life and elderly care. 

Gray Cat Marketing and Design in Portland has won an American Graphic Design Award in the Brand Identity category for its work developing the logo, business cards and brochure for Liz’s Personal Chef Service. The awards are a five-decade-old national flagship competition recognizing design’s best and brightest in 24 categories from print and packaging to Internet and interactive design. This year’s competition received more than 8,000 entries from graphic design firms, advertising agencies, in-house corporate and institutional designers, publishers and other media.
