The African Children’s Choir will be performing at 4 p.m., March, 2, at Merrill Auditorium, 20 Myrtle St., Portland. The program features well-loved children’s songs, traditional spirituals and gospel favorites. Ticket revenues support Children’s Choir programs, such as education, care and relief and development programs. Music for Life, the parent organization for The African Children’s Choir, has educated more 52,000 children and impacted the lives of more than 100,000 people through its relief and development programs. Music for Life seeks to help create new leadership for tomorrow’s Africa, by focusing on education. Most recently, the African Children’s Choir accompanied South African opera singer, Pumeza Matshikiza, on some tracks for her debut album which was recorded at Abbey Road Studios in London. A new spa area at Salon & Day Spa, Brunswick, is completed. The new space allows more spa services, including side-by-side services. Along with the new spa area, Fran Janowski and Brianna Ellis have been hired as licensed massage therapists. New clients will receive $10 off their first service with Janowski or Ellis. The Appalachian Trail Conservancy received a $20,000 grant from L.L. Bean in support of ATC’s Grants to Clubs program. The Grants to Clubs program supports the 31 Appalachian Trail maintaining clubs and their partners to complete necessary projects along the Trail. These projects include trail, shelter and bridge construction, recruiting and training new volunteers, purchasing tools and safety gear, developing educational materials and community outreach. Since 1982, L.L.Bean has donated more than a $500,000 to the Grants to Clubs program.
Habitat for Humanity of Greater Portland named William Leete, of Leete & Lemieux, P.A., as the 2014 board president. He succeeds Jonathan Campbell of TD Bank. Additionally, Dana Twombly has joined the board and will sit on the development committee.
