Local heroes honored

Five individuals and one company in southern Maine are being honored as “Real Heroes” by the American Red Cross of Maine for going above and beyond in service to others. These heroes will be honored at a breakfast Thursday, March 13 at Holiday Inn By The Bay, Portland. The recipients are: Judith French, Real Heroes Public Safety Award; Terry Flaherty and family, Real Heroes Blood Service Award; Austin Marhak, Real Heroes Life Saving Award; Janice Parker, Real Heroes Education Award; and Karen Rea, Real Heroes American Red Cross Volunteer Award. For more information about the Real Heroes’ Award Breakfast, or to purchase tickets, visit MaineRedCross.org.

Yarmouth Boat Yard and Moose Landing Marina have partnered with Navtronics Marine Group to offer KVH satellite and communications systems.

Giving Back

To help helping repay the $33 million renovation bond passed by Cumberland County voters, the Civic Center is offering five Founding Partnerships at $75,000 each with a minimum five-year commitment. The Libra Foundation has stepped forward with a 10-year commitment that will allow nonprofit and community groups to enjoy access to Civic Center events.

New Hires, Promotions and Appointments

The Maine Conservation Corps welcomed John Mylroie, of Cape Elizabeth, to serve as a trail training member and AmeriCorps volunteer for a six-month, 900-hour term of national service.

PDT Architects hired Jacob Beck, Abigail Hopkins Cram, Christian Prasch, Christian Schoewe and Allison Zuchman.

Katie Burke and Dan Routh joined Creative Imaging Group. Burke will be director of account management and Routh the creative director.

New Ventures

Foundation Brewing Company, the latest addition to Portland’s craft beer scene, began brewing beer in February and is on target to roll out its first keg in March. The brewery will produce two types of beers initially, a saison and a farmhouse India pale ale.

Brooke Nicholas, owner of Adventure Dogs Inc. Doggie Daycare, a walking and off-leash adventure program for dogs, recently opened Doggie Daycare, 79 Orchard Road, Cumberland Center. 

Recognition

The Maine Department of Health and Human Services announced that the Portland Water District has been awarded a U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Water Fluoridation Quality Award.

The American Heart Association announced that several Maine employers have received national recognition for promoting physical activity and health in the workplace through the Fit Friendly Worksite program. The program is part of the AHA’s national healthy living initiative, My Heart. My Life., which offers a simple set of solutions that focus on improving nutrition, physical activity and children’s health.

Cornerstone Financial Planning, LLC., financial planners, with offices in Portland and Newington, N.H., celebrates its 10-year business anniversary this month.

Brain Injury Voices, a volunteer group based at New England Rehabilitation Hospital in Portland, is being honored with a 2014 Hospital Award for Volunteer Excellence by the American Hospital Association. One of only four programs chosen for this honor out of nominees from across the United States, BI Voices will be honored at the American Hospital Association’s annual meeting in Washington D.C., in May.
