Race and walk event supports Uphill Journeys

On Sunday, May 4, the second annual Renee’s 5K Run/Walk & PHun Walk will be held the Lisbon Community School at 33 Mill St. in Lisbon.  The PHun Walk begins at 12:30 p.m., and the race at 1 p.m. All age groups and surrounding areas are encouraged to participate. Proceeds of the race will be donated to UPHill Journeys in honor of Lisbon resident Renee Brodeur, who was the recipient of a double lung transplant in June of 2011. Ultimately, she died from pulmonary hypertension in April 2012. Uphill Journeys is a Maine Medical Center program providing support to patients who experience transplant-related and other financial expenses related to pulmonary hypertension. Visit runinarace.com/Renee to register online for the 5K. Pre-registration is $20. Race day registration is $25 and begins at 11 a.m. Teams are welcomed. There is no PHun Walk registration fee for patients, supporters and children. Overall male and female race winners will receive a $50 gift certificate to L.L. Bean.

Events

This year’s Greater Portland Business Expo will be held Thursday, May 1, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Holiday Inn By the Bay, 88 Spring St., Portland. The Expo showcases the innovative, resourceful and creative areas businesses and features 70 exhibitors, food and beverage sampling by a dozen area vendors, and Machine to Machine and Cloud Technology seminars presented by Verizon Wireless.

Giving Back

Six Mortgage Network, Inc. employees from the company’s South Portland and Portland offices spent an afternoon at the Preble Street Resource Center soup kitchen. Judi Hutzler, Elizabeth Knight, Kimberley Johnson, Karen Dufour, Jeff Rae and Courtney Ouellette served hundreds of meals to homeless and low-income adults, children and families.

The Maine Women’s Fund has awarded grants totaling $90,000 to organizations working to build economic security for Maine women and girls. The 2014 grantees will be recognized at the Maine Women’s Fund annual Leadership Luncheon on May 21, at the Holiday Inn by the Bay in Portland.

New Hires, Promotions and Appointments

Norton Insurance Financial, has hired Patrick LaVoie as sales manager. For more than 25 years, LaVoie served as president of the Dunlap Agency. Most recently, he held the position of regional president at One Beacon Insurance. While at One Beacon, LaVoie was national director of producer development, where he trained and mentored many new recruits in the agency.

The American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy announced the appointment of Gayle A. Brazeau, as the seventh editor of the American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education, the association’s official scholarly publication.

Recognition
