‘Scarborough Fare’ serves
up local family recipes
SCARBOROUGH — The Scarborough Historical Society has released a new recipe book, “Scarborough Fare,” which features over 300 recipes from 100 local residents.
“We wanted to feature family recipes – the ones that are handed down through the generations,” said SHS board member Susan Snow, who submitted a blueberry bread recipe that originated from her great-grandmother.
You’ll find recipes you don’t see everywhere, like a recipe for
fried clams that was a specialty at a former restaurant in Higgins Beach called Conora, ” said Mary Pickard of the historical society.
Other recipes featured are lobster stew recipes from Sue Bayley of Bayley’s Lobster Pound in Pine Point and Barbara Griffin’s brown bread, which has been a staple at the North Scarborough Grange bean suppers.
Local historical notes and references found between recipes add flavor to the book as well.
The recipe book is available for an $18 donation at the Scarborough Historical Society, located next to the Dunstan Fire Station on U.S. Route 1. Proceeds from the book will be used to sponsor school and community programs.
