Goodwill to offer free
computer recycling

PORTLAND — Goodwill Industries of Northern New England has partnered with Dell Computers to provide free computer recycling at its 25 stores located throughout Northern New England.
Through the ReConnect program, Maine residents can drop off used computers and computer accessories at any Goodwill store or donation center.  The donated computers are not limited to the Dell brand, nor do they have to be in working condition.
Dell has contracted with Michigan-based Resource Partners to disassemble the computers, recycling what can’t be used and reusing working parts.
ReConnect is also available to businesses. “The response has been terrific,” said Goodwill communications coordinator Michelle Smith. “We’ve already received truckloads of computers from businesses that have been holding on to old computers because they didn’t know what to do with them.”
Goodwill received over 70,000 pounds of computer parts in its first month of the program, and appear to be on track to reach its goal of recycling 950,000 pounds of computers in the first year.
Goodwill is the first nonprofit in Maine to offer free computer recycling. “Our hope is that this program helps divert computers from landfills and makes it easy and accessible for people to properly dispose of their  computers,” said Smith.
