Awards

The United Way of Greater Portland recently provided a $10,000 grant to support Community Financial Literacy’s education program. The grant will specifically help 40 to 60 refugee and immigrant families become more financially literate, and secure in their future. CFL is an economic development and educational organization that empower refugees and immigrants by helping them become self-sufficient.

The Maine Writers & Publishers Alliance recently announced Freeport resident Terri Demmons is the recipient of the autumn 2012 Martin Dibner Memorial Fellowship for Maine Writers. Demmons began writing when she was 11, creating worlds of talking horses and magical powers with her best friends.

Cancer Community Center recently received the WCSH-6 6 Who Care Agency of Distinction Award at the Portland Museum of Art. News anchors Cindy Williams and Pat Callaghan of WCSH-6 presented the award to CCC Executive Director Michele Johns. 6 Who Care honors individuals and one community organization for exceptional service to the greater Portland community. The award was created by WCSH-6 and United Way of Greater Portland. As the 2012 Agency of Distinction, the Cancer Community Center receives a cash gift of $2,000. Last year the center served more than 1,000 adults affected by cancer, connecting people with resources.

The Casco Bay branch of the YMCA of Southern Maine recently received a donation of $27,000 from L.L.Bean, the proceeds of the  recent annual L.L.Bean 10K and Family Fun Run. The 10k race, which was recently inducted to the Maine Running Hall of Fame, has raised more than $162,000 for the Casco Bay branch over the last 10 years.

New Hires and Promotions

Baker Newman Noyes, a Portland-based accounting firm, has seen recent growth in its tax and audit departments: Adam Aucoin has joined as a staff member in the tax department. Aucoin holds a master’s in administration from the University of Maine and comes from an accounting firm in Bangor. Nora Antonio has joined as a staff member in the audit department. Antonio graduated, summa cum laude, with a bachelor’s in business administration from St. Joseph’s College of Maine. Jacob Day has joined as a staff member in the audit department. Day earned his Bachelor of Science in accounting and finance from the University of Maine. Brooke Freeman has joined as a staff member in the audit department. Freeman holds a bachelor’s in business administration and a master’s in administration, both from the University of New Hampshire. Eric Leveille has joined  as a staff member in the audit department. Leveille holds degrees in biology and radiation sciences, as well as a master’s of business administration from Thomas College.

Lori Cunningham recently joined Winxnet, a Portland-based IT solutions provider, as an inside sales representative and will be assisting clients in both Massachusetts and Tennessee. She has prior experience selling both IT hardware and telephony solutions. Most recently, she worked as a personal banker for Gorham Savings Bank.

Sean Mahoney recently named executive vice president and director of programs for the Conservation Law Foundation. In the new position of executive vice president, Mahoney will assume management responsibilities for CLF’s advocacy throughout New England, with the goal of maximizing mission advancement while helping CLF achieve its membership and revenue goals.

New Locations and Openings

Maine Running Company, a running retailer, announced recently it has signed a lease to relocate its Portland store to 309 Marginal Way beginning in February 2013. The company will occupy 5,000 square feet at the new location.

The Portland branch office of Scottrade relocated to the Western Avenue Crossing shopping center at 85 Western Ave. in South Portland. The company offers a full line of investment products and research tools to help self-directed investors make better investing decisions.  

Back in Motion Physical Therapy recently opened it third clinic at 1041 Brighton Ave., Portland.
