Michael Wood joined R.M. Davis, a Portland-based wealth management firm, as vice president and portfolio manager.

Falmouth resident Tom Nash, the director of Windham Raymond Adult Education, was elected as president of the board of directors of the Commission on Adult Basic Education at a conference in New Orleans. Nash has served on the board as region one representative for New England and New York since he joined the board two years ago. As president, he will provide leadership to the association and to the field and represent the association at regional and national meetings to promote adult education and literacy.

Good Deeds

Saco & Biddeford Savings become a lead sponsor for Maine’s first 3M cloud library with a $6,000 pledge to the Scarborough Public Library. The library is one of the first 100 libraries in the United States to offer the cloud library. Launched six months ago, the system delivers new standards of technology and learning to library card holders through eBooks and remote renting and purchasing. Since the launch, hundreds of eBooks have been downloaded to compatible devices and 3M eReaders available for checkout. 

Morrison Center, a private, nonprofit organization, announced “Claws for a Cause” fundraising event in January raised $2,500 to support services to children and adults with disabilities. The event was hosted by Portland Pie Company in partnership with Gritty McDuff’s and the Maine Red Claws. The money raised will help the Center purchase a specialized lift for adults.

District Two Portland City Councilor David Marshall contributed $2,500 to Green Initiatives Education Fund, a Portland-based nonprofit. The contribution came from the remaining funds donated to Marshall’s  re-election campaign last fall.

Scholarships

The Shelter Institute is accepting applications for the annual Patricia K. Hennin Scholarship until 3 p.m. May 24. The scholarship, established to honor company co-founder Patricia K. Hennin, awards free enrollment in a Shelter Institute course of the recipient’s choice, valued at approximately $1,000. High school juniors and seniors currently enrolled in school as Maine residents are eligible. Preference is given to students with a demonstrated interest in the fields of engineering, architecture or construction. The scholarship recipient will be announced May 31. Founded in 1974, Shelter Institute has taught people from around the world how to design, build, and thrive in energy efficient homes.

Recognition

Kathy Martin, the City of Portland’s Children’s Oral Health Program coordinator, received the Pheobe Conrey King Access to Healthcare Award for her significant contribution to improving health care access in Maine. The Children’s Oral Health Program is part of the City of Portland’s Public Health Division and works to ensure that all children have access to quality oral health care. The program focuses on education, prevention and care coordination, allowing every child in need of follow-up treatment to get care.

Kathy Duca, manager of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage in Cape Elizabeth, announced Molly Rogers was recognized for outstanding achievement and named broker of the month in March for superior sales. Rogers has been with the brokerage since 2003 as a residential real estate agent and relocation specialist. A 16-year resident of Scarborough, Rogers is involved in various school and community affairs.

Portland-based Allagash International received the Small Business Exporter of the Year Award for 2013 from the U.S. Small Business Administration. Terry Ingram and Allagash International will be honored at a celebration luncheon June 4, at the Spectacular Event Center in Bangor. The U.S. Small Business Administration was created in 1953 and assists small businesses in creating jobs, preserving free competitive enterprise and strengthening the overall economy of the United States. 

Diane Dusini, of Scarborough, a divorce lawyer and president-elect of the Maine State Bar Association, was awarded the Alumni Association Distinguished Service Award at the annual dinner of the Maine Law Alumni Association. Dusini graduated from the University of Maine School of Law in 1987.

Verrill Dana attorney James G. Goggin authored a chapter in the latest edition of the  Thomson Reuters book, “Recent Trends in Trademark Protection, Leading Lawyers on Educating Clients, Understanding the Impact of Technology, and Navigating the Current Marketplace (Inside the Minds).” Goggin has more than 25 years of experience litigating nationwide in the intellectual property area, including trademark, broadcast licensing fee agreements, copyright infringements, trade secrets and patent litigation.

New Products

Yarmouth Boat Yard and Moose Landing Marina announced it is the newest authorized dealer for Parker Boats and Regal Boats. The two new boat lines complement their existing new boat inventory. Both Parker and Regal boats will also be available through Moose Landing Marina, located in Naples.
