South Portland resident Ted Hellier was named Maine’s Citizen Volunteer of the Year at the annual Maine Parks and Recreation Association conference held April 9. Hellier has volunteered as a coach, official, trainer, and coordinator in numerous South Portland Parks and Recreation programs over many years, and is the first South Portland resident awarded the MRPA honor. He coached hundreds of boys in the lacrosse program, even after being diagnosed with cancer last fall.

L.L. Bean received the Corporate Leadership Award during the Appalachian Trail Conservancy’s fourth-annual awards gala in Washington, D.C., on May 15. L.L. Bean is one of the largest corporate contributors to the ATC and continues to support thousands of local volunteers. Since 1982, L.L. Bean has donated more than $500,000 to the Grants to Clubs program. Administered by the ATC, the program helps clubs and partners complete needed trail, shelter and bridge construction while recruiting and training new volunteers, purchasing tools and safety gear, and developing educational materials and community outreach.

New Hires, Appointments and Promotions

The Catholic Foundation of Maine has selected Elizabeth Powers Badger as its new executive director. Badger brings a diverse range of experience as a nonprofit executive, engaging people in philanthropy and increasing vital resources. Badger comes from the Salvation Army, where she has been the director of donor relations for northern New England since 2009. There she collaborated with 23 local offices to solicit and cultivate major gifts and planned giving donations in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont, exceeding the fund-raising goals each year.

Derek Pelletier, of Portland, was recently elected to the board of directors of the conservation organization Friends of Casco Bay. An aquatic ecologist with Environ International Corp., specializing in water quality issues, Pelletier evaluates the potential risks to fish, wildlife, and humans from contaminated sediments and surface water.

Immigrant Legal Advocacy Project and Ronald A. Kreisman announced Kreisman is stepping down as executive director due to differences over organizational management. The board has appointed ILAP’s legal director, Susan Roche, as interim executive director to ensure a smooth transition and lead the organization while the board conducts a search for a permanent executive director. Roche joined ILAP as a staff attorney in August 2000 and became supervising attorney in 2003. In March 2011, she became legal director. In addition to handling her own case load of full representation cases, Roche supervises attorney and paralegal staff and directs legal work.

The board of directors of the Sam L. Cohen Foundation has selected John Shoos as the new executive director. Shoos succeeds Nancy Brain, the first executive director. Brain is retiring this month after 10 years of leadership. Shoos is currently vice president for public policy and advocacy at United Way of Greater Portland. He has held various positions at the United Way during his 26-year career. The Sam L. Cohen Foundation strives to ensure that all people have the opportunity to develop their potential and provide healthy, productive futures for themselves, their families, and their communities.

Broadreach Public Relations, a growing communications firm headquartered in Portland, was recently named a 2012 Constant Contact All Star for its management of clients’ email marketing, event marketing and online surveying efforts.

Broadreach Public Relations welcomed Michael Geneseo as an account executive. Geneseo will work with clients on media strategy and outreach, promoting their visibility and helping their stories achieve the precision and impact to be heard. He has also been charged with developing new business opportunities.

Good Deeds

After an April 8 Scooping for Community event, the Gelato Fiasco donated $589 from sales at its Portland store at 425 Fore St. to Girls on the Run-Maine. Through its Scooping for Community events, the company has donated more than $10,000 to Cumberland County-based schools and nonprofit organizations in the current school year. Girls on the Run is a positive youth development program which combines an interactive curriculum and running to inspire self-respect and healthy lifestyles in pre-teen girls.

Saco & Biddeford Savings made a $1,000 donation to the Greater Portland Christian School of South Portland.

Acquisitions 

The State Theatre, a partnership of Alex Crothers and The Bowery Presents, announced the purchase of Port City Music Hall at 504 Congress St. in Portland. The live music venue opened four years ago in the Portland Arts District, and has hosted to artists including Grace Potter, Neko Case, They Might Be Giants and Dr. Dog. The venue accommodates 529 people, and the new owners plan to host more than 120 shows annually. Port City Music Hall will also be available for private events and parties. After a schedule of shows this month, the venue will be closed in July for two weeks for some minor updates.
