Recognition

Stanley N. Marshall Jr. was the recipient of the 2013 Maine Philanthropy Award presented by the Maine Association of Nonprofits and Colby College. Since his retirement 12 years ago, Marshall has been active with full-time volunteer work for a number of organizations. Acting as chairman of the board of directors for Legal Services for the Elderly he has secured a permanent home for agency’s administrative offices and statewide helpline, launched public speaking and annual campaigns, and overseen the enhancement of LSE’s salary and benefit structure. During his time with the agency, the number of seniors who receive free legal aid has increased by 30 percent.

Jennifer DeSena, a broker with the Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage real estate office in Cape Elizabeth, has been recognized for outstanding achievement and was named broker of the month for April. An active listing and selling agent, DeSena has been a resident of the Oakhurst neighborhood in Cape Elizabeth for more than 21 years. She has also been elected to the Cape Elizabeth School Board twice. 

Thomas J. Keating, a medical oncologist with Maine Center for Cancer Medicine and a Brunswick resident, was honored with a 2012 American Cancer Society St. George National Award for his outstanding service to the community in support of the society’s mission. Keating was one of 26 inspirational individuals nationwide who received the award, conceived in 1949 by Dr. Charles S. Cameron, former society medical and scientific director. Recipients were chosen based on ongoing leadership, time commitment, and dedication to areas such as mission delivery, patient support, legislative advocacy, fundraising and event engagement. All nominees for this award have dedicated at least six years of their time to the fight against cancer and have significantly contributed to advancing the society’s mission.

Good Deeds

The South Portland/Cape Elizabeth Rotary Club, which has focused on assisting Maine’s homeless veterans, has worked out a bus pass program to provide transportation to many southern Maine veterans. The overall program provides a total value of more than $600, most of it donated by the Rotary Club, and will provide 345 one-way trips for veterans throughout the region. Thanks to the South Portland Bus Service, METRO, and Shuttlebus-ZOOM, a system has been established to provide a variety of bus passes. These will be given to officials of the Veterans Administration who will determine how best to manage and distribute these passes.

Accomplishments

Freeport residents Aiko Clougherty, 8, and Owen Patrick, 12, were the top female and male youth finishers in Woodfords Family Services’ third annual 5K Run/Walk for Autism May 4. Clougherty finished with a time of 47:20.01 and Patrick with a time of 24:33.00, setting a new record for the youth division. Both runners received $50 cash prizes.

New Hires, Promotions and Appointments

Rachel Cooney, broker and owner of Portland’s Choice Realty announced the addition of Rebecca Lord to the agency. Lord’s past real estate sales experience and her can-do attitude will serve her clients well. She specializes in residential properties in Cumberland County.

Heather Caston-Talbot, of Westbrook, was named an account executive in the business insurance department at Clark Insurance. Caston-Talbot is a graduate of the University of Southern Maine and is the president of the Insurance Professionals of Greater Portland, an industry trade association. Caston-Talbot has more than 13 years of experience in the insurance business and joined Clark Insurance in 2004.

Verrill Dana announced the addition of Janet V. Britton to its labor and employment practice group. Britton joins Verrill Dana after having served as in-house counsel to Delhaize America, which operates a number of retail grocery store chains from Maine to Florida. Britton advises business clients of all sizes in labor and employment matters such as personnel policies, hiring and firing, anti-discrimination laws, employee manuals, the Family Medical Leave Act, the Fair Labor Standards Act, reductions in force, and related business contract matters such as employment agreements, severance agreements and independent contractor agreements.

Martin’s Point Health Care welcomed sports medicine specialist John Colianni at the Portland Health Care Center. Colianni will be providing sports medicine consults for current Martin’s Point patients and families through referrals from the providers at the Portland Health Care Center and surrounding sites. 

Benjamin A. Lord has joined Portland-based certified public accounting firm Albin, Randall & Bennett as a manager. Lord is a certified public accountant and a certified construction industry financial professional. He specializes in providing consulting and financial accounting services to construction, real estate development, manufacturing and professional services firms. He will practice primarily with Albin, Randall & Bennett’s construction group.

Sharon Newman was recently appointed to serve on the Maine Technology Institute Environmental Technology Board. Newman will serve a three-year term on the nine-member board, one of seven review boards at MTI. MTI assists entrepreneurs and startups as well as established businesses and institutions to bring their technology to market by providing financial and networking resources. MTI offers development loans of up to $500,000 and seed grants of up to $25,000. Board members evaluate loan and grant applications and make funding recommendations, and provide policy advice relevant to their area of expertise.

Mergers

Turner Barker Insurance, previously a subsidiary of Gorham Savings Bank, has merged with Clark Insurance. Clark Insurance remains an employee-owned independent insurance agency with Gorham Savings Bank having a minority interest in the combined agencies. Christopher Emmons, president and chief executive officer of Gorham Savings Bank, will join the board of Clark Insurance. Turner Barker Insurance will continue to do business under its own name with the tagline, A Clark Insurance Agency. The combined agencies have approximately 100 employees offering solutions for personal, business, employee benefits, life and health insurance.
