Recognition

Leigh Ingalls Saufley, the first female chief justice of the Maine Supreme Judicial Court, was named 2013 winner of the Sampson Catalyst for Change Award by the Jean Byers Sampson Center for Diversity in Maine at the University of Southern Maine. She is the seventh winner of the annual honor, which will be awarded Oct. 17. Saufley embodied the life, work and values of Sampson by helping refocus the state’s court system to better deal with domestic violence and family law. She was instrumental in strengthening the special adult and juvenile drug courts, and led the court into committing timely access to interpreters. This year’s dinner will be held at the Italian Heritage Center in Portland. 

The Early Care and Education Professional Development Network at the Muskie School of Public Service at the University of Southern Maine Youth Development Credential I was awarded to Cameron Moore and Susan Baker. Moore is site coordinator for Family Focus’ Hawthorne Before and After School Program. Baker is site coordinator for Family Focus Before and After School Program at Harpswell Community School. The credential recognizes Moore’s and Baker’s experience, training, and education in the area of youth development. 

Portland Ballet Company was named Best Arts/Dance Group in this year’s Best of Maine Down East edition. The Company presents world premieres,  great classics, and innovative contemporary works in venues ranging from the Portland Public Library window to the Imperial Theatre in St. John, New Brunswick. Founded in 1980, the affiliate Portland School of Ballet has trains dancers and is recognized nationally for its unique academic partnerships and pre-professional program, CORPS.

New Hires, Promotions and Appointments

Amy Maheux is now a customer service manager at the Portland office of People’s United Bank. Maheux coaches and trains the staff on its customer service skills. She is responsible for the daily operations as well as maintaining procedures and policies in the branch.

TD Bank  named Shawn R. Leger the store manager of the One Portland Square branch. He is responsible for new business development, consumer and business lending, managing personnel and overseeing the day-to-day operations at the branch. Leger has 16 years of banking and personnel management experience. Prior to joining TD Bank, he worked as branch manager and vice president at Key Bank in South Portland. Leger was also market performance manager for the Maine market and a banking center manager for Bank of America. He began his banking career at MBNA, working in both Portland and Belfast.

Peter Fendler, president of Norton Financial Services in Cumberland, was named to Commonwealth Financial Network’s Retirement Advisor Council, an exclusive 22-member group of advisors. The Retirement Advisor Council comprises advisors who specialize in, and have a deep working knowledge of qualified retirement plans. The group exchanges business planning ideas, collaborates on how Commonwealth can help affiliated advisors achieve success, and helps shape the direction of Commonwealth’s retirement plan offering.

Danielle Triffitt joined Tedford Housing as office manager at 14 Middle St., Brunswick. Triffitt is responsible for all aspects of office administration for Tedford, which includes two Brunswick emergency shelters and six affordable housing units in mid-coast and central Maine.

Lennie Burke  joined the Norway Savings Bank as branch manager of the Maine Street and Cooks Corner branches in Brunswick. Burke’s responsibilities include providing leadership to ensure the highest level of customer service is delivered. Burke is also responsible for business development, deposit growth and serving as the senior retail lender in the branches.

Good Deeds

People’s United Community Foundation, the philanthropic arm of People’s United Bank, awarded $15,000 to the Gulf of Maine Research Institute in Portland. The Institute is committed to sustaining a healthy ecosystem and vibrant communities in the Gulf of Maine bioregion. Foundation funding  will support the GMRI Lab Venture! Program, which has become one of Maine’s most innovative science learning experiences for more than 66,000 fifth and sixth grade students since its inception.

Milestones

Jeffrey Neil Young celebrated his 25th year with the workers’ right law firm McTeague Higbee this month. Young joined the firm as a partner in 1988. His practice represents employees and unions in employment disputes, concentrating on age, sex, race and disability discrimination matters as well as wage and hour disputes. A frequent name on the Best Lawyers in America and New England Super Lawyers lists, Young was named the top “Lawyer of the Year” in Maine in the specialty of Employment Law-Individuals in the 2013 edition of The Best Lawyers in America. His name recently was submitted to the White House for a federal judicial vacancy in Maine.

The Planet Dog Foundation, Planet Dog’s nonprofit grantmaking organization,  surpassed the $1 million mark in donations made since 2006. The foundation has provided cash grants and product donations to canine service organizations across the country that are helping dogs help people. PDF is funded primarily by Planet Dog’s contribution of 2 percent of every sale to the grant-making fund and augmented through private donations and the proceeds from local fundraising events. The fund is also supported by 100 percent of the sales proceeds from the Orbee-Tuff Glow for Good Ball.
