WATERVILLE — Pauline Gahagan Buxton, 96, died March 22.

She was born in Caribou on May 19, 1912, the daughter of John F. and Elizabeth (Cunningham) Gahagan.

She graduated from Caribou High School in 1929. On July 1, 1943, she married Dr. Almon W. Buxton at the Fort Williams Army base.

An early supporter of equality for women in the work force, she was the office manager at JC Penny’s in Waterville for many years. She also worked in her husband’s medical office.

She loved her family and spending time at their camp on Salmon Lake. 

She stayed active in her community over the years through volunteering and supporting organizations, including the Rosary Sodality in Waterville, the Business Professional Woman’s Club, Cerebral Palsy Club, Salvation Army and volunteering in numerous capacities at the Waterville Osteopathic Hospital.

She was predeceased by her husband in 1990, and siblings, Evangeline Russell, Ruth, Arnold, Albert, Jack, and Doris Bouchard, and Eva Burr. 

Surviving are her daughter, Elizabeth A. Buxton of Falmouth, her son, Michael Buxton of Waterville;  grandchildren, Brendan M. Buxton of Kinston, N.H., James L. Buxton of Mechanic Falls, Melissa A. Buxton of Waterville, and Nicholas N. Buxton of Waterville; great-grandchildren, Freya Buxton of Kinston, N.H., Jace Huard, Jenna Rodrigue, and Jayden Gagne, all of Waterville; sister, Iva Deveau of Caribou; sister-in-law, Ann Wallace Buxton of Vienna, Va.; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial donations may be made to the Waterville Humane Society, 100 Webb Road, Waterville, ME 04901 or Inland Hospital, 200 Kennedy Memorial Dr., Waterville, ME 04901.

Memorial services will be held at a later date in the spring.
