TOPSHAM — Paul C. Downing III, 78, died April 6 at the HillHouse Assisted Living Center in Bath.

Downing was a New York State bank examiner for many years and lived in New Jersey for 42 years. For 10 years he and his wife, Martha, vacationed at their home in South Berkshire County, Mass., where his family had a long historical connection.

For many years the family spent summers in Harpswell. Downing and his wife moved there in 2005.

He is survived by his wife, Martha Cornish Downing, of Topsham; children Christy Lopez of North Plainfield, N.J., Lindsay Schiafo and her husband, Russell, of Chester, N.J., Shelley Mazzarino and her husband, John, of Californ, N.J., and Paul Downing IV and his wife, Dana, of Dunellen, N.J.; sister, Nancy Brown of Pomona, N.J.; 13 grandchildren; and a half brother and half sister.

A funeral service will be held on April 14 at 10 a.m. at the Finnerty & Stevens Funeral Home, 426 Main St., Great Barrington, Mass. Interment will be in Mahaiwe Cemetery, Great Barrington, following the service.
