Rocker Pat Benatar kicks off the Waterfront Concerts series Saturday night, May 2, at the Maine State Pier in Portland. More than 20 other shows are scheduled for the pier this year.

A capacity crowd braves chilly temperatures in the low 40s Saturday for the first installment of this year’s Waterfront Concerts series at the Maine State Pier in Portland. Pat Benatar kicked off the concert season with her husband and bandmate, guitarist Neil Giraldo.

Meanwhile, at Merrill Auditorium, The Portland Symphony orchestra celebrated its 90th anniversary in grand style Saturday night, May 2, with a season-finale concert featuring performances led by the orchestra’s four most recent conductors. Taking their bows are current maestro Robert Moody, Paul Vermel, Bruce Hangen, and Toshi Shimada. On Monday, May 4, the orchestra announced Moody’s 10th season in 2017-2018 will be his last, and it will begin a search for a new musical director.
