SOUTH PORTLAND — Communities will hold their annual parades and ceremonies on Memorial Day, this Monday, May 26. 

The South Portland War Veteran’s Memorial Association will place flags on the graves of veterans in the city’s five cemeteries on Saturday, May 24. The group will meet at 50 Peary Terrace at 9 a.m. and invites volunteers to join. 

On Monday, the association will host the Memorial Day Parade at 10:30 a.m., starting at Southern Maine Community College. The parade will continue west along Broadway and end at the Veteran’s Memorial Monument at Mill Creek Park. A wreath-laying ceremony will follow at the public boat landing at noon. 

The association consists of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 832 and American Legion Post 832. For more information, call 767-2575 or 799-3997.

Scarborough

A bus will leave from American Legion Post 76 on Manson Libby Road at 7:45 a.m. for services at Scarborough cemeteries to honor veterans, starting at Black Point Cemetery and ending at Memorial Park at 9:15 a.m.

The annual Memorial Day parade will begin at 10 a.m. at the Maine Veteran’s Home, where the Kora Temple Highlanders will perform. Parade participants will meet behind Scarborough High School at 9:30 a.m.

The parade continues along U.S. Route 1 until 11 a.m. Afterward, there will be a brief flag-raising ceremony at Post 76 at 11:45 a.m. and an open house with food and refreshments.

Cape Elizabeth

Cape Elizabeth’s Memorial Day Parade begins at 9 a.m. at the intersection of Fowler and Old Ocean House roads. It then continues north along Route 77 and left on Scott Dyer Road to the War Veteran’s Memorial, where the parade will end with a wreath-laying ceremony and the town’s Vietnam veterans will be honored.

Following the parade, the public is invited to an open house at the Town Center Fire Station on Jordan Way.
