PORTLAND — Painting for a Purpose will hold its 9th annual Artful Auction 5:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 1.

Painting for a Purpose supports the Portland Public Schools through grants to students who wish to use the creative arts to support civic improvement or community engagement projects of various types.

For example, a grant was awarded to a group of girls at Portland High School who created a mural to reflect the wide diversity of girls within the student population.

Another recent grant supported the creation of an outdoor sanctuary for students at Presumpscot Elementary School who need a place to calm down and take a break. The sanctuary consists of a labyrinth made up of painted kindness rocks.

Tickets to the auction, which will be held at DiMillo’s On the Water in the Old Port, are $10 at the door. The event includes both a silent and live auction, along with a raffle.

All of the service learning grants must be student initiated and student led, according to the Painting for a Purpose website, www.paintingforapurpose.net.

The live auction will feature fanciful garden totems and original paintings by noted Maine artists. The silent auction will feature whimsical items for the home and garden.
