YARMOUTH — The Portland Area Comprehensive Transportation System has contributed a $350,000 grant for bicycle and pedestrian accommodations on the new Route 1 bridge over Main Street.

The bridge renovation is expected to cost $3.1 million, plus an additional $1 million for sidewalks, lighting and features under the bridge.

Town councilors voted in December 2014 to keep the bridge after the Maine Department of Transportation asked the town to consider what course of action to take for updating the aging structure.

A construction schedule hasn’t been finalized, but according to a draft on the town website, the bridge will be completed in 2017 or 2018.
