SUBHEAD-SMCC sweeps Hesser
Southern Maine Community College’s men’s and women’s basketball teams both defeated visiting Hesser College Thursday. The women broke open a close game with a 54-24 second half run to win 86-46 behind 25 points and 14 rebounds from Sonya O’Tash and 10 points and 11 boards from Rachel Del Camp. Amanda Chandler added 15 points, Roxanne Creveling finished with 13 and Darcey Webster had 12. SMCC improved to 12-8 overall and 10-0 in Yankee Small College Conference play. In the men’s game, the Seawolves blew it open in the first half, leading by 25 points at the break, en route to a 87-71 triumph. Coleman Findlay continued his dominant season with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Scott Proudman added 18 points, Josh Tuplin had 15 and Kory Martin finished with 14. SMCC is now 15-6 (8-2 in conference). Both teams play at New Hampshire Technical Institute Thursday.

SUBHEAD-PBC fighters advance at Golden Gloves
Portland Boxing Club open class middleweight Russell Lamour Jr. beat Kenny Farr of Burlington, Vt., in the second round of the Northern Regional Golden Gloves. Keith Derrig also advanced to next week’s regional finals with a unanimous win in the open class light heavyweight division over John Janezyn of Springfield, Vt. Super heavyweight Zachery Cutler lost a close unanimous decision to Matt Cardente of Windsor, Vt.

SUBHEAD-McAuley basketball clinic Sunday
Come learn how to improve your game this basketball season. Head coach Wil Smith of Catherine McAuley High School will be joined by basketball team members for the following girls’ basketball clinics being held on Sunday, Feb. 8 at Catherine McAuley High School. SUBHEAD-Girls and Women in Sports Day upcoming
Bowdoin College will host the annual Girls and Women in Sports Day Sunday at Farley Fieldhouse. The session for grades K through 3 is from 12 to 2 p.m. Grades 4 through high school go from 2:30 to 4:45 p.m. The free event is designed to introduce young women to a wide range of sports. Pizza and snacks with the Bowdoin student-athletes will be available afterwards.

SUBHEAD-Tucker’s Boardercross for Cancer upcoming
The fourth annual Tucker’s Boardercross for Cancer, a fundraiser for the Maine Children’s Cancer Program, which also honors the life of Yarmouth’s Tucker Olmsted, will be held Feb. 14 and 15 at Sunday River. The Olmsted family and MCCP have established a Special Purpose Fund, dedicated to research, development and promotion for complementing approaches in the treatment of cancer. Shirts and hoodies, raffle and auction items will also be available.

The Maine Lacrosse Officials Association is holding its annual men’s high school referee training program Feb. 22 and March 1 (with March 8 as a snow day) at North Yarmouth Academy. Officials are needed for boys’ lacrosse for the upcoming season.
