PORTLAND — The building across Middle Street from police headquarters was evacuated for about two hours Monday as police investigated a suspicious package left in the lobby.

Assistant Police Chief Vern Malloch said offices at 100 Middle Street were closed, as well as Middle Street from Franklin to Pearl streets from around 9-11 a.m., while the police Hazardous Devices Unit inspected the package. A K-9 unit also assisted in a search of the area.

Malloch said the package was deemed safe and the building reopened and the incident remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 874-8575. Tips can also be left online at www.portland-police.com or by texting 274637 and using the keyword “GOTCHA.”
