Deering senior Stephen Ochan receives the Maine boys’ soccer Gatorade Player of the Year award from school principal Ira Waltz last week. The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field, distinguishes Ochan as Maine’s best boys’ soccer player. Ochan, a midfielder, scored six goals and added six assists last fall, leading the Rams to the Western Class A semifinals. Ochan was also named Southwestern Maine Athletic Association Offensive Player of the Year and Western Maine Board of Soccer Officials Player of the Year, was selected as Maine’s lone boys’ soccer All-American and was also chosen Deering’s Fall Male Athlete of the Year by The Forecaster. Ochan, who is the president of his senior class, has maintained a B-plus average in the classroom. He has volunteered locally on behalf of a soup kitchen and youth soccer programs. Ochan hasn’t announced his college choice.
