FALMOUTH — The OceanView retirement community is asking its 354 residents  to support fundraising efforts to expand the Falmouth Memorial Library.

After pledging to donate $250,000 to the expansion project over the next five years, OceanView has now challenged residents to match that contribution and bring the total amount to $500,000.

Overwhelmingly approved by voters last November, the total cost of the project is $5.6 million, with no more than $2.8 being financed by the town. The other half will be funded by a capital campaign organized by the library board of trustees. Fundraising must be complete by 2016. The project is expected to take nine months to a year to complete.

OceanView’s commitment would aid the library’s capital campaign. Its challenge to residents runs through Dec. 31.
