Maine Mock Trials
AUGUSTA — High school students from 22 schools across Maine are gearing up to participate in the Maine State Bar Association’s annual Maine Mock Trials.
The mock trials are held in Maine courtrooms, with the students serving as defendant, witnesses, prosecutors and defense attorneys. Each competition consists of two trials, with each school team taking a turn as the prosecution and the defense.
Victory is awarded by a panel of judges based on which team made the best case.
The first round of the four-hour mock trials will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Portland.
The Cumberland County schedule for the first round is as follows: Portland vs. Bonny Eagle, Nov. 2; Biddeford vs. McAuley, Nov. 3; Deering vs. Falmouth, Nov. 4; Cape Elizabeth vs. Waynflete, Nov. 5; Cheverus vs. Freeport, Nov. 6.
The final round of the Mock Trial competition will be held in mid-December.
NYA, Yarmouth host
Off-Broadway play
YARMOUTH — A special, one-night only performance of the Off-Broadway play, “The Rivalry,” by Norman Corwin will be held at the Yarmouth High School Performing Arts Center at 286 West Elm St. at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 5.
“The Rivalry” is a dramatization of the infamous 1858 Lincoln-Douglas debates that addressed the volatile issues of the time, including states’ rights and human rights.
The play, performed by its original actors, received rave reviews from the New York Times and has been endorsed by the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission of Massachusetts.
General admission tickets are $5 and are available at the door beginning at 7 p.m.
Falmouth seniors named
commended students
FALMOUTH — Seven Falmouth High School seniors, William Hayes, Samuel Jaffe, Chadwick Pritchard, Luke Seitz, Benjamin Snowdon, Charles Swerdlow and Kathryn Vogt were named Commended Students in the 2010 National Merit Scholarship Program.
Although they will not continue in the 2010 competition for national Merit Scholarships, Commended Students are recognized for placing among the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2010 competition.
Mitchell earns
Youth Service Award
YARMOUTH — Emily Mitchell of Yarmouth, a senior at North Yarmouth Academy, received the Youth Service Award from the Portland Rotary Club.
The award is presented to area high school students who exemplify the Rotary motto of “Service Above Self.”
In addition to the award, Portland Rotary made a $100 donation to Safe Passage on Mitchell’s behalf.
