Falmouth HS team takes
first in Science Bowl

FALMOUTH — A team representing Falmouth High School recently earned first place in the Northern New England Regional Science Bowl held at the USM Gorham campus.

The team was comprised of Falmouth High School seniors, Tyler Evers, Ryan Gao, Chadwick Prichard, Ben Snowdon and Alyssa Yeung.

Science Bowls are competitive science and math educational and academic events sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy to expand student interest in science & mathematics.

Magazine publishes
Freeport child’s work

FREEPORT — A national children’s magazine, Spider, has selected original artwork and a story by six-year-old Anna Yankee of Freeport for publication in its “Spider’s Corner” column.

Yankee’s original drawing of a dog and cat can be found in the magazine’s March 2010 issue. Her story will be published in April 2010. Both items can be viewed online at spidermagkids.com/corner.

Spider magazine, a publication for children ages six to nine, features stories, artwork and articles by children from around the world.

Falmouth, Gorham team
competes in Robotics event

FALMOUTH — Robotics Team, Northern Force “FIRST Robotics Team 172, comprised of more than 50 students from Falmouth and Gorham High Schools, recently competed at the regional FIRST Robotics competition at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts.

The team created a robot named “FalGor,” that could move around other robots on a playing field and shoot soccer balls into a goal. The robot  was designed and built by the students at Lanco Assembly Systems in Westbrook.

Team 172 won the Chrysler Team Spirit Award for the fourth year in a row.

The Falmouth Middle School Jazz Band, “Iron Twinkies,” on March 20 won the 2010 Maine State Jazz Band Championship in Division I. The band, under the direction of music teacher Jerry Barry, placed first for the eighth time in a row. Eight individuals earned Outstanding Soloist Awards, including Russ Barnard, Will D’Agostino, Alexandra Ertman, Matt Estabrook, Matt Lamare, Noah Levy, Elias Robinson, and Brian Yoon.  D’Agostino and Robinson also received the State Jazz Festival Outstanding Musicianship trophy, placing them among the top five Division I musicians. Joining the students listed above are band members Eric Chen, Lexis Anderson, Charlotte Cutshall, Ben Aicher, Riley Engelberger, Nate Wolf, Jessica Abramson, Elise Bickford, Ben Dobbins, Abby Whitmore, Isabel Friedman, Maggie Seitz, Callie McMahon, Adam Gardner, Jaspreet Kohli, Iain Kurry, Sam Larson, and Cayman Bickerstaff.
