Students receive regional scholastic writing awards

North Yarmouth Academy students Xander Bartone, Morgan Elkins, and Hannah Grant received 2014 Alliance for Young Artists & Writers Scholastic Writing Awards. The Southern Maine Writing Project, in conjunction with the Literacy, Language and Culture Program at the University of Southern Maine, hosted this year’s Scholastic Writing Awards in Maine. Students sent 222 submissions and of those, 28 Gold Keys were awarded to the most accomplished works. Gold Key writing will be forwarded to the the nonprofit Alliance for judging in mid-March. Silver Keys were awarded to 47 Maine writers, while 50 writers received Honorable Mentions.

Falmouth students deliver awareness

The Falmouth Elementary School Wellness Committee delivered 550 “Growing Valentines” this week to various assisted living facilities throughout Falmouth as well as to Cedars in Portland. The event was part of an ongoing effort to cultivate community and raise awareness of the health benefits that the outdoors and the observation of the outdoors bring to people of all ages.
