MCWHS students are musically inclined

Maine Coast Waldorf High School freshman Grace Kessler and MCWS middle school students Isla Barmby, Jack Byrne, Nora Goldberg-Courtney, Wesley Teegarden and Louis Walker traveled to Oxford Hills High School to participate in the District Two MS/HS Honors Instrumental Festival on Jan. 19 and 20. The musicians were selected through a competitive audition process and spent two days rehearsing with notable conductors preparing for a performance Jan. 20.

The following weekend on Jan. 26 and 27, sophomore Miles Lloyd (Honors Band), senior Sarah Grill (Treble Choir), sophomore Brenna Moore (SATB Chorus), and junior Finn Dierks-Brown (SATB Chorus) participated in the District Three High School Honors Choir and Band Festival at Cony High School in Augusta. These students also earned their places through a rigorous audition process and at the festival worked under master directors towards a performance on the 27th.

Both festivals are sponsored by the Maine Music Educators Association.

YHS senior a superb volunteer

Olivia O’Halloran, 17, of Yarmouth and a senior at Yarmouth High School, was named a state finalist in The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, a nationwide program honoring young people for outstanding acts of volunteerism. O’Halloran dedicated hundreds of hours to volunteering with “Art Attack,” a summer camp that encourages young children to create art from the natural resources around them. She has also served as a mentor to an elementary schooler and traveled to Peru and the Dominican Republic to help children in need. O’Halloran will receive an engraved bronze medallion.
