What’s Happening in District 51?
CUMBERLAND — As always, the first few months of the school year are a time of transition, reconnections and new beginnings. In MSAD 51, the first two months were filled with achievements by students and teachers, as well as the completion of a few long-term projects, such as the high school renovation.

At Greely Middle School, math coach Mary Belisle wrote an article about what a teacher needs from a teaching coach. It was published in three national publications, earning an acknowledgement from the president of the National Council of Teachers of Math. Also at the middle school, the wellness program led by physical education teachers Wendy Rozene and Diane Peters was awarded a $2,000 “Let’s Go!” grant to purchase GeoMotion equipment, videos and nutrition kits to promote wellness through exercise and nutrition.

In student news, Greely High School senior and student council president, Emily Norton, was named the Lion’s Club student of the month. At the North Yarmouth Memorial School, students in the gifted and talented program promoted the work of local nonprofit Safe Passage through an informational mural and refreshments for teachers and staff. In return, teachers and staff donated $200 to Safe Passage, which provides educational opportunities and support to children whose families work in the Guatemala City garbage dump.
