Falmouth music students selected for regional festivals
FALMOUTH — The 2012 All-New England Band Festival featured Falmouth music students Elise Bickford on trumpet and Alexandra Ertman on flute. The students traveled to Plymouth, N.H., in November to perform with other top musicians.
The Maine All State Band/Orchestra/Chorus Festival, to be held in May at the University of Southern Maine, will highlight Falmouth High School students, who were selected after recent auditions. Students selected for the chorus are Jackson Castagna, Sophie Chaney, Chris Coughlin, Riley Engelberger, Matt Estabrook, Cody Foley, Julie Guerra, Lynnea Harding, Alden Herodes, Caroline Levy, Andrew Ostrow, Madeline Roberts, Ben Rogers, Paul Vella, Julia Warnock, James Wegener, and Abby Whitmore. Alexandra Ertman, Grace Fan, Keunjoo Kim, Seoyeon Kim and Eleanor Roberts were selected for the orchestra.
In addition, 63 Falmouth Middle and High school students were chosen for the District II Middle School/High School Band, Chorus and Orchestra Festival. Falmouth High School student Lynnea Harding earned the concertmaster title for the festival.
String of hope to be sent to tragedy-stricken community
North Yarmouth Academy is organizing a school-wide message to show student, faculty and staff support for the Sandy Hook Elementary School community. A string of prayer flags containing haiku poems that articulate messages of hope have been created and will be sent to Sandy Hook Elementary School.
Two teachers organized this project, inviting members of the NYA community to craft hopeful haiku poems about the tragedy in Newtown. The haiku was chosen for its universal form, solidarity and power. Further, it is a structure that is familiar and accessible to all ages. The prayer flag concept was chosen to capture the community’s sentiments in a unified way.
After one school day, the teachers had collected over 150 prayer flags from parents, students, teachers and staff. Parents have volunteered to assemble all of the flags during the holiday break. In January, members of the NYA community will gather to share the haikus before sending it to Newtown, Conn.
