Local students to advance to state poetry slam

Richard Hilscher, a senior at North Yarmouth Academy, and Wyatt Bates, a Yarmouth High School junior, were chosen as two of 10 student-poets who will compete in state finals at the Waterville Opera House on March 14. Other Southern Maine Regional Champions include Allan Monga, Deering High School; Abbie vanLuling, Gorham High School and Emma Lombardo, Westbrook High School. The local winners will take on the five finalists who are the Northern Maine Regional Champions.

After three rounds of competition, one state finalist will be named the winner and advance to the national competition, where a total of $50,000 in awards and school stipends and a $20,000 scholarship will be up for grabs.

The Maine Poetry Out Loud state finals will be streamed live through Facebook Live on the Maine Arts Commission’s Facebook page.
