BARRY MOTHES—Greely hockey

Greely’s boys’ hockey team wore the bulls-eye and wore it well this winter, going 19-2 and one year after falling one overtime goal shy of a championship, bringing home the hardware this time around after a dominant postseason run.

Orchestrating another title run was Barry Mothes, who has established Greely as one of the state’s finest programs and for the third time (2004, 2009), earning The Forecaster’s nod as our Northern edition Winter Coach of the Year, of a boys’ team.

Mothes took over the Greely program in 1995 and after some near-misses, led the Rangers to their first regional championship in 2007 and first Class B state title in 2009. Championships followed in 2011 and 2012. After losing to Old Town/Orono in overtime in the 2018 state final, the Rangers were heavy favorites this winter and didn’t disappoint.

Early in the year, Mothes won his 300th game with the program and Greely ultimately went 16-2 against a very tough schedule, which featured several Class A foes.

As the top seed in Class B South, the Rangers were absolutely unstoppable, scoring a total of 27 goals in rolling past Gorham in the semifinals, Cape Elizabeth in the regional final and finally Old Town/Orono in a lopsided state final (8-0).

“It was a very rewarding season,” said Mothes, who has also taught English for many years at Greely. “I’m very happy for the players. I feel lucky enough to have been part of this as a coach a few times. I know how hard the guys worked.”

The Rangers aren’t going anywhere. They’ll be right back in the mix for another title and that figures to always be the case as long as Barry Mothes, our Northern edition boys’ team Winter Coach of the Year, is running the show.

SETH FARRINGTON-Freeport basketball

Farrington inherited a Falcons squad coming off its best season in over 40 years and led them back to the regional final, getting the most out of a talented group and setting the stage for even more success down the road.

For making the most of a challenging situation and keeping Freeport near the top of the Class B South heap, Seth Farrington gets The Forecaster’s nod as our Northern Edition Winter Coach of the Year, of a girls’ team.

Farrington played for Gray-New Gloucester High School and served as an assistant coach there before taking over the North Yarmouth Academy girls’ program in 2015. Farrington coached the Panthers two seasons, spent a year at Wiscasset, then made the move to Freeport this year after Mike Hart stepped down.

The Falcons had reached the regional final in 2018, losing to Lake Region, then lost a lot of contributors to graduation, but Farrington kept them atop the heap, relying on standout Caroline Smith to lead the way in the scoring column and molding several other key contributors.

Freeport won 14 regular season games (tied for second-best in program history) and after knocking off Mountain Valley in the quarterfinals, it rallied to edge Cape Elizabeth in a thrilling semifinal. Despite a valiant rally, the Falcons fell short against eventual state champion Gray-New Gloucester in the Class B South Final, but it was a memorable campaign nonetheless.

“People saw our record, but they don’t know we won a lot of single-digit games and had games we were losing in the fourth quarter, but we found a way,” Farrington said. “That goes back to the competitive drive of our kids.”

Freeport will be a favorite next season, but with Seth Farrington, our Northern edition girls’ team Winter Coach of the Year, leading the way, the Falcons figure to be up for the challenge.
