NORTH YARMOUTH — A new fire-rescue chief could be named by early next month, Town Manager Rosemary Roy said this week.

The top candidate will replace Ricky Plummer, the town’s fire chief since 2012, who resigned to head the Old Orchard Beach Fire Department. Michael Robitaille – Yarmouth’s fire-rescue chief – is serving in North Yarmouth in an interim capacity until Plummer’s permanent replacement has been hired.

Thirty-four people applied for the position by the deadline of Oct. 8. The town selected seven to interview, but two declined after submitting their applications, Roy said.

Roy makes the decision on who gets the job; there is no recommendation to the Board of Selectmen, she explained, noting that two members of the department and a community member have assisted in the process.

Robitaille’s agreement with the town is scheduled to end Nov. 1, but the arrangement may have to be extended one or two weeks until the permanent chief is in place, Roy said.
