Officials training course upcoming

The Western Maine Board of Soccer Officials is conducting their annual New Officials Training Course Saturday at the Gorham Municipal Center’s Recreation Department. The one-day clinic is followed by several on-field training sessions with seasoned officials. There is a small fee. Lunch and rulebooks are provided. The Board provides officials for all middle school, freshman, JV and varsity soccer in York and Cumberland counties. Southern Maine Flame tryouts upcoming

The Southern Maine Flame softball program is holding tryouts for the 2014 season Wednesday, Aug. 21 at 5 p.m. and Sunday, Aug. 25 at 3 p.m. at Wainwright Farms in South Portland. A $20 fee is required. FMI, southernmaineflame.com.

Freeport announces first week preseason schedule

The fall sports preseason begins Aug. 19 and Freeport High has announced its first week schedule. Football goes from 8 to 10:30 a.m. and 4 to 6:30 p.m. at the Pownal Road Recreation Field. Equipment will be issued Sunday, Aug. 18, at 6 p.m., at the back door of the gym. Boys’ soccer goes from 8 to 11 a.m. at the soccer field. The girls’ team goes from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. on the 19th and from 8 to 11:30 a.m. the other days, at the field. Field hockey meets from 8 to 11 a.m., on its field. Cross country meets from 5 to 6:30 p.m., on the front lawn of the high school. Golf meets at 3:30 p.m., at Toddy Brook. Cheering goes from 4 to 6 p.m., at the school cafe.

Stripers compete at championship meet

The Casco Bay YMCA Stripers competed at the Maine and New Brunswick Swimming Championships in St. John, New Brunswick last month. The Stripers were 11th of 21 teams. The girls came in eighth, while the boys were 14th. Falmouth’s Quinn Chicoine was first in the 50 free, setting a team record with a time of 33.88 seconds. Yarmouth’s Alex Ericson set a new team record in the 8-and-under breaststroke (2 minutes, 27.59 seconds). Freeport’s Mackie Libsack was in the top eight in five events. Yarmouth’s Ethan Nightingale was in the top eight in the 100 and 200 freestyle. Yarmouth’s Zoe Siegel was in the top three in five events, setting team records in the 100 free (1:17.27), the 100 breaststroke (1:52.04), 50 butterfly (35.45), 100 fly (1:35.01) and 200 individual medley (3:25.30).
