Hockey playoff matchups set

The puck for the start of the boys’ hockey playoffs was dropped Tuesday. In Western A, Falmouth, the defending state champion, earned the top seed at 13-5 after closing with a 4-3 home win over Scarborough behind Isac Nordstrom’s two goals. The Yachtsmen hosted No. 8 South Portland (12-7) in the quarterfinals. If the Yachtsmen advanced, they’ll go to Lewiston Saturday for the semifinals against either No. 3 Biddeford (9-7-2) or No. 6 Thornton Academy (7-10-1). In Western B, two-time defending champion Greely (8-7-3) earned the No. 3 seed after a 6-3 home win over Gardiner behind Tommy Thompson’s two scores. The Rangers hosted No. 6 Cape Elizabeth (7-10-1) in the quarterfinals (see theforecaster.net for game story). If victorious, Greely would play either No. 2 Camden Hills (13-4-1) or No. 7 Maranacook/Winthrop (7-11) in Friday’s semis in Lewiston. Yarmouth earned the fourth seed in Western B after going 11-6-1, finishing with a 5-3 home win over York, a 6-5 triumph at Camden Hills and a 3-0 home loss to Gorham. Isaak Dearden scored twice against the Wildcats. Bobby Murray had four goals in the win over the Windjammers. The Clippers hosted  No. 5 Kennebunk (10-7-1) in the quarterfinals. A win sent Yarmouth to Friday’s semifinals against top-ranked Gorham (15-3).

Falmouth hockey player a Travis Roy semifinalist

Falmouth senior Andre Clement was named one of eight semifinalists for the Travis Roy Award, given annually to the top player and sportsman in Class A hockey. The list will be whittled down to four — two each from Eastern and Western Class A — and the award will be presented at the annual Maine Class A hockey coaches’ banquet following the season. The award is named for Travis Roy, the former Yarmouth resident and North Yarmouth Academy player who was paralyzed from injuries sustained 11 seconds into his first shift at Boston University in 1995.

Greely field hockey coach steps down

Kristina Lane Prescott, Greely’s field hockey coach since the 2007 season, announced Monday she’s stepped down to spend more time with her young children. Prescott went 60-43-5 during her seven seasons, leading the Rangers to the playoffs on six occasions.
