Local runners cap season at New Englands

The curtain came down on the cross country season for many local runners who took part in the New England championships in Manchester, Connecticut. Falmouth’s boys (led Bryce Murdick, who had the 19th-best time, 16 minutes, 15 seconds) were 13th out of 30 scoring teams, while Class B state champion Freeport placed 26th and Class C champion Merriconeag finished 30th. The Falcons were led by Chandler Vincent (63rd, 17:14). Merriconeag’s top finisher was Tucker Pierce (131st, 17:52). On the girls’ side, Yarmouth came in 15th, while Class B champion Greely was 20th. Greely’s Katherine Leggat-Barr had the 32nd-best time (19:25). The Clippers were led by Anneka Murrin, who had the 62nd-best time (19:58). NYA’s Hannah Austin competed as an individual and was 105th (20:34).

Freeport names new coaches

Mike Hart will be the girls’ basketball coach at Freeport this winter. Hart coached the Fryeburg Academy girls for three years and the Morse girls for four, compiling an 87-47 record and reaching the semifinals three times. Hart was named the KVAC Coach of the Year in 2009-10. This spring, Marcia Wood will take over the girls’ lacrosse program. Wood, who is also Freeport’s varsity field hockey coach, spent 10 years at Scarborough, winning over 100 games and four Class A championship.
